Grade Two

Grade 2 Report

Literacy:

During our Literacy block we focus on reading, writing, spelling and speaking and listening. Students have been enjoying our weekly big book rotations in which they participate in a range of meaningful tasks that include how to structure a sentence, punctuation and grammar and comparing texts. Our SMART Spelling program continues to be a vibrant and successful approach to teaching spelling. Talk Write/Build Write sessions provide our students with a platform to explore a topic before writing about it and also allows students to be provided with immediate feedback during the writing process.

Maths:

The students have made a terrific start to the term in Mathematics. Key Words play an important role in our classrooms. Terminology that can be utilised at home to enhance our current data unit include: tally marks, categories, least, most, more than, less than, graphs, data, interpret etc. Using Rob Vingerhoets’ style of open-ended teaching, students have been extending their understanding of mental computation strategies. Students are continuing to work on their mental computation strategies such as counting on, counting back, doubles, doubles plus one to solve simple equations and worded problems.

Inquiry:

Our Integrated topic this term is Sustainability. Students have been exploring how to be more sustainable in their everyday lives and have enjoyed looking at ways in which they can reduce, reuse and recycle their rubbish. We have recently started Nude Food Tuesdays and we love that students are getting involved whilst considering healthier eating. We are looking forward to finishing up this unit with a visit to the CERES Environmental Education Program.
