Prep Report
WOW…what a busy start we have had to Term Two. We’ve worn our pyjamas to school, celebrated 50 days at school, learnt all about staying safe online with Sam and Trent from ‘The Cyber Safety Project, pampered our ‘MUMS for Mother’s Day and participated in our first school ANZAC day ceremony.
Even with all these things happening we have still been learning so much in our classrooms.
Numeracy:
Capacity, addition, number, length, patterns and money are just some of the areas we have covered in Numeracy. Learning is so much FUN when you are filling your shoes with blocks, measuring with your feet, using dominoes and playing cards to make addition sums, creating patterns from different materials, sorting play money into groups and going to the sandpit for a capacity lesson. It’s been all hands-on in numeracy. As well as doing all of this this we are still counting down the days until our 100th day of school.
We have started our unit on ‘Sustainability’ and everyone is really excited. We are going to be the first prep year level to create a ‘veggie patch’ at school. To get things started each class planted some seeds, such as lettuce, rocket, spinach, cucumber, silverbeet, radish as well as lots of different herbs. We are nurturing and caring for them until the seedlings are ready to be planted. We hope you have all planted the seeds we sent home with your child and you are starting to notice some changes. We certainly are!!!
As well as growing our plants the preps have been learning about recycling our rubbish. We have three bins in the classroom where we sort out the soft plastics, paper and general rubbish. We will soon be talking about how to reduce the amount of soft plastic rubbish we have in our lunch boxes and how we can fix this problem. It’s just been amazing to see how many AWESOME RECYCLERS we have and how concerned they are for the environment.
Literacy:
Here are a few reminders and tips for helping your child with reading at home:
*Read the book using only the pictures.
*Talk about what you saw in the book (retelling).
*Read the book again with a parent helper/sibling/friend.
*Make sure they point to each word with their finger (Tommy Tracker).
*Hunt for any blue words and sound out the sounds they know.
The following are some questions you can ask your child after they have finished reading to you:
- Where did the story take place?
- What happened in the story?
- Who was in the story?
- What were they main characters doing?
- What was the story about?
- What was your favourite part?
- What do you think will happen next?
All of these will help your child become a better reader.
Thanks,
The Prep Team.
