Message from the Director of Learning

- Ms. Alice Paget

Congratulations to the Year 7 students on completing their first semester of secondary schooling. It was a busy start to the year settling into the secondary school routine and studying a range of core subjects, electives and iCreate. They have also experienced Year 7 Adventure Day to Arthur’s Seat Tree Surfing, Peer Support with our fantastic Year 10 leaders, Weekly Sport and Camp at Lorne!

The Year 7 and 8 students are looking forward to beginning their new electives next semester. The Year 7 students will be studying Food Technology and Visual Arts, whilst the Year 8 students will be studying Drama and Digital Technology.

The Year 8 students will begin to make important decisions regarding their pathway through secondary school, starting with their choice of a Year 9 elective next semester. Their time in the junior school, studying a broad range of subjects will assist them in making an informed decision based on their passions and interests. Please make sure you pencil in the Course Selection Information Night on Tuesday 24th July. Both Year 7 and 8 students will choose their iCreate subject for next year too.

Year 7 Peer Support Program

From the beginning of the year, we have had 20 amazing Year 10 students work very hard with our new Year 7 student.  These Peer Support students helped our Year 7s develop their skills and abilities to ensure they are successful and safe for the rest of their lives. The purpose of this program is to allow students to learn from other students, develop long lasting friendships and provide mentors who our younger students can talk to, get help from and be guided by, without any fear of judgement and hate. The Year 10s have had ongoing support and training to develop their own skills, often given up their own time to dedicate themselves to this important program.

The Year 7s have learned a number of skills such as communication, organisational skills, resilience skills and worked on areas such as bullying, support and mental health. The Year 10s have also developed a number of skills and the school has witnessed all of them become more mature and passionate.

Congratulations to everyone who has participated this year.

2018 Chinese Show

On the 5th of June, all students in our Junior School gathered to watch a Chinese show. The host, David Kral (Wang Laoshi) was born in Australia and loved to learn about Chinese culture and Chinese language. He started off the show by singing songs from popular Disney movies, such as Mulan, Frozen and Moana.

Afterwards, David proceeded to introduce himself in both Chinese and English. We also tried to say our names in Chinese. David then shared with us details about his Chinese journey and how he learned to speak Mandarin fluently. He started to learn Chinese from Year 7 and continued through to university. David was also in the Jiangsu Foreigner competition, which led him to visit China with the Australian team. He continued to talk about his experience of seeing the Great Wall of China and The Forbidden City. Our students sang many songs in Chinese and won prizes for answering questions.

Overall, the China show was very entertaining, memorable and it reminded us why we need to learn another language. Our Junior  School students all enjoyed the show and we can’t wait for the next one!
