News from the Principal

- Mr. Tristan Lanarus

Dear Westall Secondary College Community,

We have reached the halfway mark of the year when we review progress against goals and targets set in February, and sharpen our focus and strategies for the next 6 months. This is an annual process, but in 2018 is even more important as this work and reflection will inform our next 4-year Strategic Plan. 2018 is our school review year and we will be spending the next 6 months working with various stakeholders, namely students, staff, parents, DET representatives and community members, to review our progress and set the agenda for the next 4 years. This is a critically important process that all Victorian Government schools go through and I encourage you to get involved in the different forums and activities that will take place and will be communicated to you all in the coming months.

We have had a number of staff changes in the last month. Mrs Lynch and Ms Nu (Wellbeing), Mrs Ball (EAL) and Mrs Wagenfeld (Arts) have all confirmed they won’t be returning in Term 3. Mrs McMahon has also finished her 12 month VCAL role at Westall. I would like to welcome Mrs Alexander (Wellbeing), Mrs Collingwood (EAL) and Mrs Gatsios (VCAL). Mrs Blias, Mrs Tetoros and Mrs Nikoloau are on leave in Term 3 and will be replaced by Ms Senevirathne, Mrs Sharma and Mrs Andjelkov.

We have added 2 new locker bays and completed refurbishments in the ALC Centre with new operable walls. Our new flags and flagpoles have been installed and we are working on a new Wellbeing Centre and International House. These new buildings will complement the major building upgrades planned over the next 5-7 years. Work on the Westall Primary school rebuild is due to commence by the end of Term 3.

Please use the holiday period to discuss with your student/child the importance of selecting the “right” subjects in 2019. This process has now commenced and course booklets are available to view on Compass. When we return in Term 3, each student will need to finalise their subject selections for 2019. It is the subjects that students choose that determines the whole school timetable and staffing requirements for next year.

I want to thank all students for your efforts throughout Semester One and publicly thank all our fabulous staff for your tireless efforts. Enjoy a safe and restful holiday period. I will be in Vietnam for most of the holidays working on our International Student Program.

See you all for Term 3 on Monday 16th July.

Until next time,

Mr. Tristan Lanarus
