Co-curricular

This week has been another successful week with a full array of activities occurring both on and off campus activities. Musical auditions for Guys & Dolls have almost been finalized, Cadets have now completed a full cycle of home training and we have had another full weekend of sporting fixtures.

Cricket

On Saturday the KWS 1st & 2nd grade cricket teams faced off on the main oval. The boys involved in the two teams participated in reconciliation round for Australian Cricket by holding a barefoot ceremony prior to the game. See more below.

Swimming

The KWS swimming club travelled to Homebush this weekend to participate in the NSW Country Championships. The whole team competed well with a continuation of the PB’s being swam. The swimmers appear to be in a good place as they head into pointy end of their representative swimming. Congratulations must go to Bianca Fuller who was named female swimmer of the meet. Well done to the whole KWS swim club who are performing exceptionally everywhere they go. See more below.

KWS VS BARKER MATCH REPORTS

SENIOR A

KWS 1st had a positive result on the weekend coming out on top with the win of 5-3 over Barker. Barker put up a fight which challenged our team. Thankfully Lilly Clarke slid through with a hat trick. Barker soon came back with a few quick plays, but our star winger Phoebe Gordon had it sorted flying down the sideline and giving us a two-point lead of 4-2. As the unpredicted warmth caught up to us towards the end, Barker slipped through once more until Anita Lewis stepped up and put us in a comfortable lead with the result of 5-3. All Kinross players were amazing, and we can’t wait for the season ahead. Thankyou Joel, Miss Madden and Mr Priest for all your help on the day it was muchly appreciated as the day wouldn’t have been possible without your assistance.

JUNIOR A

KWS Junior A (KWS 5) came up against a strong Barker 11 team in the ISA Junior A competition on Saturday morning. Barker 11 possessed some very skilled and extremely quick players, but our KWS girls could not be faulted in their effort and determination to work hard for each other.

The first half started with an early try to Barker, but KWS hit straight back to level the scores and then take control of the game. On the back of plays such as a long break by Ruby Leigo, KWS finished the tightly contested first half ahead 3-2. The second half saw KWS hold out Barker on their line on several occasions, with a strong defensive effort. They also took advantage of their attacking opportunities, created by good drives down the field. KWS again held Barker 3-2 score line for the second half, winning the game 6-4. A game that all the players should be very proud of.

Tries: Katie Ivey - 2; Claudia Mason - 2; Lucy Robb; Grace Tancred.

INTER C

This week the Kinross Wolaroi Intermediate C touch team played Barker College in a nail-biting game. The final score was 5-4 to Barker College with some very close tries for the Kinross intermediate players as they dove for the line to only just be touched on their way down. The team played incredibly with strong drives and excellent teamwork, especially for their first time playing as a team. Congratulations to Bree Adam, Ellie Moanne, Emily Zell, and Alice Keirle for their fantastic tries and great assists by the rest of the team.

DIV 2

On Saturday KWS Senior Seconds played against Barker College, it was a tight game the whole way through. The KWS girls started off slowly with Barker up 2- nil at half time, but in the second half all the girls really stepped up their game. The try scoring started happening with the support of good attack moving forward. Caitlin Adam and Elle McGufficke scored one try each and Maddy Obrien scored two outstanding tries giving us the win.

Barker held up great defence all game not backing down. Abbey Kiss and Juliette Hart lead the team well throughout the game by setting up tries and supporting in the middle.

Anna Arthur and Jessy Cohen acted as great support for the mids allowing fast movement up the field towards the try line. This was a great start to the season for the seconds. KWS won by a tight score of 4-3.

Additionally, some photos from our game at Scotts All Saints in Bathurst.

Swimming

From Head Coach, Mr Kim Taylor

Let me first say a big congratulations and thanks to all the team for the way they supported one another, their behavior, and the respect the team showed for others and our surrounds…….cuddles for support, cheers for big efforts, stand clean at the end of every session, fantastic.

Well, we saw a very strange and abrupt end to NSW country with a pool contamination that prematurely finished the meet late morning on Sunday. Bit of a shame for us as we had some of our better swims to come and our overall standing could have been much better.

Friday saw some mixed results. Edwina Waterman swam a great PB in the 800m Free, negative splitting the 400s. Bianca Fuller and Kyla Brown both worked hard in the 100m Breaststroke, Bianca ending with silver. Tom Pell bronze in the 100m Breaststroke with a nice PB. Ava Ward swam well in her first major meet in the 100m Breaststroke and Chloe Mcgilvray little PB in the same event. Matt Lowther swam a big PB as did Hamish Searle, in his first major event, in the 100m Breast.

In the Individual Medleys (IM) - Bianca medaled, Kyla swam a nice PB and Ellie Mcmiles was close to her best. Tom Pell another PB. Tom has been really swimming well at major events this Summer, smashing em up. Matt Lowther pulled off a massive 9 second PB in his IM, big swim. The relays closed the night with all teams swimming great, the girls 15 years finished 4th our best result there. Thanks to Matt Lowther for swimming up in the senior division.

Saturday morning we kicked off with the 200m Free Emily Clunas and Chloe McGilvray swimming close to PB and Eddie Waterman and Matt Lowther both swam PBs. The 50m Breast came next with Bianca picking up another medal, Kyla Brown swam great in what was a really close race. Tom Pell continuing his run with another PB. The Backstroke’s jumped up with Ollie Mclaughlin winning the 100m, Tommy Pell a PB….again, and Oscar (wasting his time on a basketball court) McLaughlin a big PB from him. Bet he is glad he was consistent a practice????? Eddie grabbed another PB as did Matt Lowther and a big congratulations to Charlotte Williams finishing 3rd in the 100m Back with a six second PB. Relays finished the morning with some great teamwork and PBs for the teams.

Saturday afternoon saw Eddie Waterman swim a great six second PB in the 400m Free, great race construction. Bianca fuller 2nd in the 200 Fly, learning that if you go out too hard the back end isn’t pretty. Then we had the drag races…50m Freestyle. Matt Lowther a small PB and Chloe Provost under 30!!!! For the first time. Chloe McGilvray and Em Clunas continued consistent swims and Tom Pell close but not quite. Oscar Mclaughlin swam a ¼ second PB, as did Ellie McMiles. Kyla Brown, under 30!!!

Sunday started great with Charlotte Williams going 2 seconds quicker in the 50m Fly, finishing 8th and putting a few more points in the bank. Bianca grabbed 3rd in the 50m Fly then jumped straight up in the 400m IM with a great swim winning by going away from the field. Matt Lowther swam another great PB to finish 4th in the 200m Back.

And then a competitor in the 200m Back vomited in the pool on completion of their event, and health protocols state the pool must be cleaned and that’s a five-hour process, the officials called the rest of the meet off. Bit of a shame as we were about to start some of our more favored events. Big thanks to the junior relays, some of whom had driven down Sunday to race only to have their event cancelled.

All up not a bad weekend of racing.

Final presentations saw Bianca Fuller named swimmer of the meet, congratulations B.

Golf

Lolli-Rose Pasquali, an inspiring Kinross Wolaroi student recently travelled to Wagga Wagga to compete in the Wagga Wagga Junior Master Golf Tournament with Jack Newton Junior Golf.

Lolli played in the 14-15yrs Girls division and ended up winning that age bracket for best Net score over the 36 hole 2-day competition.

There was a total of 120 juniors playing in this tournament and we are so proud to share her results.

Well done Lolli!

Trex Tri Championships

On Sunday February 20th Tomasso competed in the Trex Tri Championships at Crackenback, Snowy Mountains. This was a XTri event, slightly different to the traditional Triathlon format. 400m open water swim in Lake Crackenback. 15 km mountain bike, 3.4km trail run including river crossing. Tomasso won the 14-15 years age group in his race. Congratulations to Tom. Great preparation for NSW All Schools, coming up on March 15th and 16th.

Rugby

This year KWS is introducing Girls Rugby 7s during Term 1. This is a new and exciting initiative and if well supported, it is hoped it will become a permanent sport of choice for girls next year and beyond.

KWS will be entering teams in the local schools competition named the Jakiya Whitfeld Cup. Jakiya is a current member of the Australian Women's Sevens Team and up until two years ago, was attending High School in Bathurst. It is our hope that girls from KWS follow in her footsteps.

We will have teams in the U14s, U16s & U18s divisions. Each team will be made up of 12 players only in total. Initial trials will take place on the following dates;

  1. Wednesday 2nd March from 7.00am – 8.00am
  2. Friday 4th March from 3.45pm – 5.00pm.

Selected girls will then be required to train Wednesday morning from 7.00am – 8.00am. Competition games will be played every Friday after school in various Central West locations on the following dates;

  1. 11th March, 2022
  2. 18th March, 2022
  3. 25th March, 2022
  4. Grand Finals - 1st April, 2022

Students wishing to play must register using the following link Girls Rugby 7s

Reports:

KWS 1sts vs KWS 2nds

Round 15 of the 2nd Grade ODCA Competition held the local derby of KWS XI v KWS 2nd XI at KWS Main Oval. The 2nds won the toss and elected to bat. Consistent quality bowling from the 1st XI made runs hard to come by for the 2nd XI, but the opening pair of Sam Gee and Tom Patton persisted with a solid defence that the 1st‘s couldn’t break until the 9th over. Afterwards, Jono Rasmussen picked up three quick wickets which placed significant pressure on the lower order. 2nd drop batsmen Rohan Wilson (14) maintained a solid defence throughout the innings as Henry Forsyth cleaned up the lower order with figures of 3/6 off 5 overs. The 2nd XI were bowled out for 44 runs. Impressive bowling performance by the 1st XI.

The 1st XI opening pair, Walter Prowse and James Glasson, started the innings with intent. The opening pair chased down the runs in the 8th over.

A dominant performance from the 1st XI squad. A match played in the best of spirits.

KWS 14 Royals vs CYMS Green round 11

The Royals played some good cricket but were defeated by CYMS on Saturday.

After winning the toss The Royals captain Jono Gee made the bold decision to insert the opposition.

CYMS lost an early wicket with the score on 12 but were able to build significant partnerships after that. The Royals’ bowling attack tried hard but generally speaking gave the opposition too many four balls as well as an overly generous donation of runs and extra deliveries thanks to 32 wides and no-balls. This helped CYMS reach 136 for the loss of 6 wickets from their 30 overs.

In reply the Royals got off to a bright start but then lost wickets quickly. They owed a great deal to Jono Gee who remained undefeated on 31 as well as Sam Hughes (17) and Will Denovan who chimed in with a bright 14. In the end 6/103 was a good effort in many ways especially considering that the innings only contained two boundaries and CYMS only gave away 13 wides and no-balls.

Herein lieth the lesson: the side that concedes the fewest extras almost always wins. If the Royals had bowled with more discipline then the game would have been a lot closer and could even have gone the Royals way.

Thanks go to Mr Holland for stepping in while Mr Kerridge was in Covid household close contact isolation and to Mr McCardell and Mr Gordon for their help with scoring.

KWS Heat v Cavaliers U16 Round 11

The Heat narrowly lost with three balls to spare in an entertaining game against Cavaliers U16s at Jack Brabham 1. The Heat have had tight games for the last month and that trend continued. Choosing to bat, Robbie Heath (23) started the innings well with support from Sinclair and Nock in particular. At drinks, KWS were 3/58 looking to build on a fast outfield, but a flurry of wickets put pressure on the tail end. Patient batting from Tom Balcomb (13) and good hitting from Jack Harding (25) and Will Younghusband (18) got the team to 8/137.

In reply, Cavs were in trouble early, 3/28 as Younghusband (4/16) and Tancred hit the stumps. Cavs middle order steadied though, and unlike the KWS innings, retained wickets through the middle of the innings, putting less pressure on their tail. Heath (2/15) bowled an inspired spell with good catches from Harding and Nock putting pressure back on Cavs. Unfortunately, the top scorer for Cavs came back in after his initial retirement and hit two consecutive fours in the last over to grab the win.

Thank you to Mr Ashton for scoring and to all parents for their support. A win is so, so close!

KWS Sixers vs Orange City Gladiator

Bowling first, the KWS Under 14 Sixers were in great spirits. Energy in the field was at a high led by Katie Lawler and Sianabel Anderson. This encouragement led to a well-rounded bowling innings – highlighted by Fergus Whittle’s 2/10 (3 Overs) – leaving Orange City 6-136 after their 30 overs. Following a collapse last week, valuing our wicket was a focus this week. Pleasingly, Kinross batted for 29 overs – with mention going to Sam Spliet and Hugh Shannon for their 16 runs each. Although time at the crease was a positive, Kinross managed just 54 runs against a very slick Gladiators side, losing by 82 runs.

KWS 14 Royals vs CYMS Green

The Royals played some good cricket but were defeated by CYMS on Saturday.

Kinross Seconds v Orange City

A beautiful, sunny day on Main started as it has all season, with Skipper Ollie Charlton winning the toss and batting, yet again. His openers may have wished he was not so successful, as the wicket was very challenging, with the City quicks getting steep bounce, whilst the odd ball kept low. Dylan Tucker grafted patiently for 16, until undone by an excellent yorker. Other batters could not negotiate the gentle, but accurate swing from Mann. Rohan Wilson got a poor decision (Sorry Rohan, I should have given you the benefit of the doubt!). Once again, it was difficult to turn over the strike and we were looking at a very early finish, until Captain Charlton came in at 5 for 35. He took the spinners apart, hitting 6 sixes and 4 fours in his 63 from 50 balls. Then it was back to business as usual, but at least 129 gave us something to defend.

Accurate bowling and the best ground fielding of the season, kept the pressure on City. Harrison Sharpe was excellent and rewarded with figures of 6 overs 2 maidens, 2 for 6. Rohan Wilson also got a couple of wickets and there might have been more, had the umpires been as generous as me (and we had held on to those half chances!). That it took City 30 overs to reach their target, reflects how hard everyone tried and that bodes well for the derby next week against Kinross Firsts.
