Religious Education

Today the College joined with Mater Dei  Primary at our Marian Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

Throughout the week Stage 4 and 5 classes have focused on Mary and the reasons why she is so special for us, her life, her gifts and her Assumption into Heaven. Mary led a life of great dignity, love and faith, she is a model for us all.

Year 8 have been working on the unit - The Church Spreads the Good News. Students have investigated early Christian communities, Pentecost, Christian Persecutions and the Missionary work of Saint Paul. Students are currently working on using Christian Values to write a letter of encouragement to a friend.

Year 9 have begun working on a Children’s Storybook as their Assessment Task. Students are required to reinterpret a New Testament Story to a level that children in Years 1 and 2 can understand. As part of the process, students will need to include the moral of the story and to write a note to parents which analyses the implications of the Biblical story for Christians today.

Year 10 students have been exploring a broad range of Saints and significant Christians in the current unit, Mary and the Saints. From St Peter to C.S. Lewis along with contemporary Catholics including Richard Rhor and Father Rob Galea. Students are required to research and to complete an inquiry task which explores the personal call to action and the YES to God's call in their chosen persons’ life prompting them to make a significant contribution to humanity.

Practices of devotion have been examined including, the Rosary and Adoration. Students have made rosary bracelets and participated in contemplative and mindfulness activities.

Studies of Religion classes have almost completed the HSC content and are busily preparing for the upcoming HSC Trial Exam which will be held at 9.00am on Friday 6 September. We wish students the very best in their preparation.

Year 11 Studies in Catholic Thought class continue to investigate the human person in relation to God, self, others and creation. The process of the human encounter with God has been explored through the lives and work of Trappist Monk Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day. Merton and Day were deeply inspired to do God’s work by living out the Gospel message in a real and active way. Students have explored the process of conversion and how the experience of transformation leads to action.

God’s creative powers, the intertwining of science and religion have been investigated. The Reformation has been discussed and how ideas such as relativism and utilitarianism have challenged the post-reformation Church.

The final unit of study for Year 12 Catholic Studies is Christian Vocation, Work and Leisure. Students are currently investigating ways that they can contribute to their local community in the future, what facilities and organisation are available and the varying forms of support that are available in Wagga. We are cooking for the Care Van and Micah Hub as a way to support those in need.
