Visual Arts in 2022

Year 7/8 – The Piñata Project

Year 7 and 8s have joined together in Art this year, starting the year with the Piñata Project. Students have begun applying the creative design process of devising and constructing a conceptual piñata of an everyday object, asking the question “What’s inside?”. Inspired by Claes Oldenburg, students will make piñata out of an everyday object and insert an unexpected filling to express an idea or message. Miñatas (mini-piñatas) have just been constructed with great success, and plenty of collaboration and problem-solving.

Year 9/10 – Self-Expressionism

Year 9s and 10s have combined to explore Expressionist portraiture. Our starting point has been the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Vincent Van Gogh, students are exploring how colour, facial proportion. Along the way we have looked at an orc character in Lord of the Rings was styled on Harvey Weinstein, and how facial proportions are manipulated to express emotions in popular culture. Students will begin devising their own self-portrait using oil pastel, through which they’ll express an emotion about a topic of their choosing.

Final word from Mr. Stanecki

I’m impressed by the fantastic art design and technology facilities at JFC. Our beautiful Tetlow kiln will get a much needed service and hopefully be reactivated to fire student ceramic work later in the year. Although I’m not a potter, I’m personally keen to reactivate the 6 standing pottery wheels we have in some capacity.

Additionally, there are excellent timber and metal fabrication resources that just need a little TLC and can offer our students and the community amazing opportunities.

If you (or someone you know) is keen to renew these amazing resources for our students, do please reach out: steven.stanecki@education.vic.gov.au
