Sports Awards 2018

Sports Breakfast

On Friday 23rd November we held our 4th Annual Sports Awards Breakfast. Guest Speakers, Parents, students and staff gathered in the GMR for a continental breakfast before the sports awards were presented.

We were very honoured to have 2 elite athletes as our guest speakers this year. First up, was Darcy Vescio, Carlton Football Club Champion. Darcy spoke about growing up in a small country town and attending school with only 19 students. She talked about how she learnt to negotiate early, if she wanted to play a game at lunch time she had to talk the whole school into participating. She also spoke about choosing subjects you are passionate about, because with passion becomes success.  Even in subjects that aren’t your favourites, try to find something in that subject that you like. Many students are huge fans of Darcy’s so we were thrilled to have her speak at our breakfast.

Our second guest speaker was Ruby Roseman-Gannan VIS Cyclist and former NHS Student.  Ruby spoke about her journey as a cyclist.  How there were many ups and downs and lots of hard work and injuries along the way. Ruby was one of the first female cyclists to compete in the Madison Event. This is still one of her favourite events.  Both speakers spoke about the importance of the balance between school life and physical fitness. It was an honour to have them speak at our breakfast, their stories to success was not easy, but both were truly inspirational.

The morning was a celebration of the achievements of our students who have not only showed their sporting skills but are also great leaders in their chosen sports in and out of school.

Our Sports captains should be commended for the morning running so smoothly. We thank them for their confidence and enthusiasm. Anyone in the room would agree that they did a fantastic job.

Year 7 Table Tennis

On Friday 30th November six Year 7 boys competed in the State Finals of table tennis at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Albert Park. The team consisted of Lewis Bush, Antonio Fernandes Carvalho Vecoso, Connor Hastings, Sascha Pereira, David Sandberg and James Wickett.

Around four hundred teams had started out – it was now down to the last eight.  The eight were split into two pools of four.

First we played Good News Lutheran School whom we defeated 6-0.  Then it was Yarrawonga Secondary College – they beat us 4-2, winning three of the four singles and one of the doubles. Last was Girton Grammar School whom we defeated 6-0.

We came second in our pool behind Yarrawonga who were undefeated. This meant we went through to the semi finals where we played the winner of the other pool of four, Wonthaggi Secondary College.

This was closely competed – we each won three rubbers so it came down to games. We had won eleven to Wonthaggi’s ten so we went through to the final.

Yarrawonga had defeated the team who came second in the other pool in the other semi final so they were our opponents. Again it was closely competed and we did better than we did the first time we played them. This time we each won three rubbers so it was down to games again. Unfortunately they won eleven games to our nine so we were runners up.

A special mention to Connor Hastings who improved to defeat his singles opponent from Yarrawonga in the final having lost to him earlier in the day.

All six boys competed well and with a good sporting spirit.

That’s a Wrap

2018 has been busy as usual with Sport.  Our Yr 7 Boys State Table Tennis was the last team to compete in an SSV event for the year. Mr O’Shea and I would like to thank each and every student who has participated in sport this year.  We are extremely proud of how our students conduct themselves on and off the playing field, during competitions and also during training sessions.  To our students and staff who have volunteered their time to coach our teams. We thank you and appreciate all of the time and expertise you offer to our teams. Without coaches the Sport department cannot run. We had some success this year, with State Championships for teams and individuals in Athletics, swimming and Cross Country. Success for us is also about getting as many students as possible joining teams, competing alongside peers and having fun whilst creating a healthy balance between being active and study. Merry Christmas to all and we wish you a safe and happy holidays.

We are excited to move into 2019.
