11/12 Visual Arts

Celebrating the arts

On Monday night, Years 11 and 12 Visual Arts students shared with the community their works in progress. We currently have 16 students studying the IB Diploma Visual Arts course, a key aspect of which is the creation of a body of 8-10 artworks which the students themselves curate into an exhibition at the end of the two-year course.

This year has been marked by a real energy and excitement in the senior art studios. Rarely does one of us pass through the rooms without bumping into a group of students working quietly before school, in the lunch breaks, during their study sessions or after school. They are working in a variety of media and addressing themes and issues such as chaos, confinement, expression, identity, personal narrative, race, history and cultural heritage; Monday night provided an opportunity to celebrate the amazing work that has come from these personal inquiries.

Strings Attached performed at the opening, treating us all to an exciting performance. In a time when the Arts has faced unprecedented challenges, it was lovely to welcome families to the opening, and the evening was a reminder of how lucky we are to be part of a school community in which the Arts is so valued.

Greta Lyttle is quoted in the Courage book: "Art, music, drama are not the frills of education but an integral part of it, indeed which helps the soul to blossom." Monday evening was testament that the philosophy on which the School was founded still holds very true in 2021.

The Year 12s will hold their final exhibition on Thursday 16 September.
