SRC

Student Representative Council (SRC)

As is the case at all schools, the SRC at John Fawkner College hopes to give students the skills to create and to implement, to lead and to follow, to learn from mistakes and to succeed. Most importantly, we want to give students the opportunity to represent the views of their peers, and to succeed in making those views heard. On an individual level, students involved in SRC can learn a great deal from their experiences. SRCs can teach young people to be confident in public speaking, presenting and communicating with others, building on those skills learnt in the classroom. While working within our school, the SRC can also contribute to policy development on issues such as student engagement and curriculum.

Our SRC members this year are: Yasmin Matasic (Y7); Zarif Ahmed (Y7); Angelique Claxton-Hendriksen (Y8); Angelina Spano (Y8): Shayde Fievez (Y8); Indiana Waterman (Y10): Hannah Swift (Y10); Meerab Aziz (Y10); Fahmi Yaqo (Y10); Max Hastings-Rumero (Y11); Moey Ayache (Y12); Christian Bartolo (Y12); Sebastian Waterman (Y12) and Balqis Waljairin Waterman (Y12)

Sebastian & Balqis are our School Captains and therefore poop responsible for representing the SRC at School Council.

Projects

The SRC meets at least three times every term to discuss a range of issues and projects. We are obliged to provide a written report to School Council about the work that we are doing, which is presented by Balqis and Sebastian.

In 2021 the SRC have defined a number of projects that they feel will support the continued improvement in the culture of learning at John Fawkner.

House Names Competition

Following our successful review and revision of the SWPBS Matrix in 2020, the SRC hoped to build on this by improving the House system at JFC, starting with the names. We recognised that the existing names – Barassi, Thorpe and Freeman may no longer be as relevant to our students as we might like – many did not know who at least two of them are. The SRC thought it would be a good idea to have four houses, each representing one of our College values and that it would be important that all students had a say in the selection of these new names. At this point, we are in the process of asking all the students in all classes to submit ideas for house names. Once this process is complete we will begin the next phase of selecting those names.

Respectful Relationships Statement

The SRC believes that John Fawkner College should be a safe, welcoming and supportive place for all students regardless of gender, ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or physical ability. The team is currently considering how well the College makes this clear in its Communication with the public, especially on the website. We have reviewed such material from other schools and it is the teams conclusion that we can do better. We’re in the process of drafting statements that we feel or explicitly state and show our respect for diversity in all its forms.

If there are any issues or ideas that you or your child feel should be discussed by the SRC that you feel will help support the development of Student Voice and inclusion at JFC,  I urge you to email the school and ensure that your ideas are forwarded to the SRC. We would be very happy to discuss anything raised by community.
