NAIDOC Celebrations in the Library

In honour of NAIDOC Week 2021, a new 'First Nations Australia' collection has been created in both campus libraries. It is important the culture and traditions of our First Nation people are remembered, not just at NAIDOC time, but all year around. I thank Mrs Johns and Ms Cloake, our Aboriginal Education Assistants, for their advice in setting the collections up.

To create these collections, some of the funds raised at our recent Book Fair were used to update some old favourites, as well as buy some new books. I will continue to keep my eye out for other things we can add. These books will be used for curriculum work, as well as personal reading.

In recent years, the Australian National Library moved the Dreamtime stories from the Fairy Tale section to the Spirituality section. Nearly all of our books were in the new correct place. For some of our older books, I have now updated the call number to reflect the correct location.

Below are photos of the new collections and a sample of some of the new books that have recently been purchased. In the Infants collection photo we have Jai KD, Anayah 1K and Tremaine 2M admiring the new books.

Stocktake in the Library

Next week, the libraries will be closed for children to borrow books. This is because there will be a stocktake underway. At the moment, a lot of our books are unaccounted for and it is a regular practice for libraries to check on the collections to ensure every item is where it should be. To prepare for this, I ask that everyone has a good look at home for any books with the St Edward's School barcode sticker. Early next term, after the stocktake is completed, overdue notices will be sent home for books that are outstanding in a student's name.

We really appreciate any support you can give us with locating the school library books.

Early Bird Book Club

Early Bird Book Club has started, but we will get more regularly underway from Day 1 next term. The Library will be open from 8am for students to come into the Library for reading. There will be someone there to perhaps hear them read a few lines and some stickers for those that come in to read.

This activity is to provide students with an extra quiet time to read that they might not otherwise get. Reading for just a few minutes every day instills a love of reading and builds confidence in our readers.

Primary Library Early Birds will be Mondays and Wednesdays every week, and alternate Fridays (Even weeks of the term)

Infants Library Early Birds will be Thursdays every week and alternate Tuesdays (even weeks of the term) and Fridays (odd weeks of the term).

NEVER FEAR! There will be a sign outside of the Library on the morning the Early Bird Reading Club is operating at each campus

Please encourage your child to take advantage of this unique opportunity. They don't have to stay all morning...just pop in when they get to school have a quick read and then go off to play. Easy!

Volunteer Book Coverers

Thanks to all the people who have covered books at home over the past few months, it is very much appreciated. If you still have any at home, it would be great to get them back and into the hands of our little readers. Return to either campus is fine and we can work on getting them into the classrooms at the Infants Campus. Thank you so very much!

See you in the Library!
