Principal Reflections

A message from Dr Jake

Dear Parents & Friends,

Report Cards are once again upon us (in fact they were uploaded to Compass last Friday - did you get yours?). At this time, it is opportune to reflect on how children are going and just how you can get that little bit more from them. I happened across an article entitled “Helping your child at school” that came from a book called A Parent Survival Kit. The tips that it provides are effective ones in getting the most out of your child and school.

  • Be Informed: Listen to your child. Read notices and, if possible, attend meetings.
  • Be Positive: Your negative or sour attitude will not help your child succeed at school.
  • Be Co-operative:Ask the teacher how you can help him/her and how you can help your child.
  • Be Assertive: Speak up for yourself and your child. Express your own feelings and ideas directly (assertive) but not in an angry blameful way (aggressive).
  • Don’t be a Gossip: If there’s a problem don’t talk to everyone about it. Just share it with the trusted few who will give helpful advice.
  • Be Friendly: Write letters of thanks and appreciation. All teachers (and principals) need encouragement.
  • Work through the Class Teacher: If your child is having problems, your class teacher needs to know about it.

Children only get one go at being a child and in receiving an education. It is therefore up to each one of us (parents and teachers) to make sure that it will be the best education we can provide. It is this partnership between home and school that will ensure that we will achieve our hopes and dreams for these children and help them achieve their own hopes and dreams.

I urge you to discuss with your child the Report Card uploaded to Compass, looking at the areas they did well in and the areas that they can put a little more effort in to next semester. There is always room for improvement, but there is also a real need to give praise and recognition when and where it is due!

Enjoy your week!

Peace & Best Wishes.
