Morning Routines and Literacy

Recently we have been starting our mornings in Senior Learning Community with a dance that we have all been learning together. The children first learnt the Cha Cha Slide when we attended the National Young Leaders Conference and it has been a great way to start our mornings as a way to focus the children for the first learning block of the day.

Below is the video that we have been learning along to should you wish to have a go with your child over the holidays.

During Literacy, we have been conducting Literature Circles. Literature Circles are a learning technique that is collaborative and allows for discussion and sharing of ideas amongst peers about a particular text being read.

Students are put into groups and are asked to read a particular part of a book. Activities are then completed that either summarise the text, predict what will happen next and how can we connect this text to another text as well as our own personal lives and the world around us. Students also need to find any words that are tricky for them to read and find the meaning of those words, so they can use them in their writing.

This is all directed by one member of the group who is the discussion director whose's job it is to ask questions about the text and be the leader of the discussion.

The final role in a Literature Circle is the creator. The creator must create their favourite scene from what they have read by drawing or creating a piece of work that represents the text from their viewpoint. Each week the roles are rotated so that every student has an opportunity at each role.

The books the students are currently reading in Literacy Circles are:

Shadow by Michael Morputo

Eureka by Jackie French

Fudge 'a' mania by Judy Blume

Banner Bold by Nadia Wheatly

Below is some of the work that has been completed by the 'creator' of the group.

Wishing everybody a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 3.

Kind Regards
