Geography, Literacy and Religion

Over the past six weeks, we have welcomed Miss Olivia Tallarico into the classroom as she completes her final teaching round. The children have really enjoyed having Miss Tallarico in their classroom and we wish her all the best as she finishes her degree and with her future teaching endeavours. Thank you Olivia for all of your enthusiasm and wonderful ideas that you have contributed to the classroom over the last six weeks.

The children have been learning about location and the words we use to describe the location of a place. Each student created their own shopping strips and using location words, for example beside, in front of, left-right, above, behind, the students explained the location of their shops.

As we continue to work our way through the alphabet learning our letters and sounds, the Preps made crowns for a queen when learning the letter Qq. We put fancy jewels on them which all the students have enjoyed continuing to wear throughout the week. We also worked on the letter Kk and created kites to represent K. The children worked very carefully as they decorated their kites and took great care as they placed glitter and bows on them.

As we continued our journey of procedural writing through cooking, we have made a few more delicious foods. Fairy Bread was a huge hit as the children had to carefully create their masterpieces before enjoying a delicious morning tea.  As you can see below the students took great pride in cutting their Fairy Bread into interesting shapes.

The following week we created a healthy and hearty pasta Bolognese. Not only do our cooking activities provide the children with an interactive writing activity, but they also provide a hands-on experience that allows the children to practice valuable skills such as how to handle knives safely and how to work with a hot surface in a safe way.  As you can see, one of the students was able to turn our writing lesson into a cross-curriculum activity by finding a way to use her celery and carrot sticks to create tally marks, which is a form of counting that our Prep students recently learned in Maths.

During Religion we have been reading the Gospel story according to Mark 4:35-41 when Jesus calmed the waters during a storm. We created our own mural using origami boats to represent the story. This story is about having faith and showing us that God is with us always, even if we do not realise it.

Kind Regards
