Inquiry Projects and Wellbeing Groups

Recently our Senior Learning Community has been participating in an ongoing research project on the topic of Australia. Students were tasked with choosing a topic relating to an important person, place, or event which shaped Australian history. Over the past few weeks, the children have presented their projects to their class. This has provided an excellent opportunity for our SLC students to practice their public speaking skills.

For the past few weeks, I have been working on a project about Ned Kelly, with my group. We all thought that doing a project about him would be fun and who doesn’t like to hear about an outlaw who stole thousands of dollars and got into battles. Anyway, initially we were going to do an iMovie for our presentation, however, once COVID hit Victoria we were forced to rethink all of that. You see since we went into a lockdown that meant we could not do anything together which also meant that the way we had designed the presentation would not work. We had already sited our links and gathered the information so all that was left was present. We were at a roadblock until we had the great idea of a late-night talk show. It was genius! I mean why do a movie when you could do a movie, Live. We tweaked the script a little bit and we presented it. It was brilliant, everybody loved it and more importantly, we were proud of what we had achieved.

Mr Brophy our Student Wellbeing Leader recently sat down with Mackenzie who is one of our Student Council Representatives to ask her what she most enjoys about our Wellbeing Groups and why they are important to her.

What two activities have you done in Wellbeing Groups so far?

So far, in the Wellbeing groups, I have done gardening with Mr Brophy and cooking with Mrs Maher.

Can you explain to me what you did in those activities?

During the gardening activity with Mr Brophy, we meditated in the Wellbeing Garden. We closed our eyes and took in our environment. It was very calming. Afterward, we pulled out as many weeds as we could, to get the garden ready for planting fruit and vegetables. I liked meditating because I think it made everyone a lot calmer. I also really liked how we were helping the environment by getting rid of the weeds.

Cooking with Mrs Maher was a lot of fun; we made pizzas. Firstly, we had to cut and grate all of our ingredients. Once all the ingredients were prepped, we chose what we wanted on our pizzas. Finally, when they were cooked, we ate them. When I was cooking, I liked how everyone was working together and having fun.

What do you like most about Wellbeing Groups and why?

What I like most about Wellbeing Groups, is how it gives everyone an opportunity to forget about work for an hour and feel calmer. I also like how all the year levels come together. It nice to see the other students and work with them.
