Farm Visit for Ag Students

The year 11 and 12 VET Certificate 2 in Agriculture students made a farm visit to Matt and Allison Reid's property at Carlisle River last week.

For some students this was their first opportunity to visit a large dairy farm. The students have been doing a number of units that relate directly to activities they completed on the visit.

The year 11's prepared a large number of questions from their units to ask Matt. They were also given a tour of the dairy and calving shed.

The year 12's are currently completing a number of units relating directly to observing, handling, identifying and feeding livestock.

They were lucky enough to observe some heifers being artificially inseminated,  handle some calves and ear tag them, see the delivery of a newborn calf, learn the recording system for managing all cattle and also looked closely at some different pastures.

It was a great practical experience for our students and a wonderful opportunity to ask some industry experts questions and learn from them in the farming environment.

We are very grateful to Matt and his team for allowing the students the opportunity to see a farm in action first hand.
