ASX Sharemarket Game

Over the past ten weeks, 90 students from Years 7 to 12 have been participating in the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) Schools Sharemarket Game. Players were given a virtual $50,000, buying and selling shares with company prices mirroring real live market prices. The game is a fantastic way to expose students to all the trials and tribulations of the market, fluctuations in share prices, market volatility as well as educating them in how to read financial news, share prices and what to look for in a company when investing.

A huge congratulations to Jackson Tout who ended the competition 6th in Australia and 1st in Western Australia earning himself a $400 cash prize! Jackson attributes his success to a strategy of investing in volatile mining and gold companies, as well as being incredibly lucky.

Congratulations to the following students who ended the game with the highest valued portfolios:

1st – Jackson Tout (Year 9) - $57,592

2nd - Felix Frichot & Xavier Jeffrey (Year 9) - $53,077

3rd – George Griffiths (Year 8) - $52,111

The ASX Sharemarket Game runs twice a year with the next round of the game beginning in August.

Year 8 Retreat – Exploring human dignity and healthy relationships

At our recent Year 8 Retreat, students explored the concept of human dignity and how it impacts the way they treat themselves and others. Through a combination of guest speakers Scott Darlow, Taryn Wren, and teachers, students looked at developing healthy relationships through the lens of Catholic social teaching.

HASS Week - 18-22 May

The Secondary College celebrated the individual disciplines within the Humanities and Social Sciences department during HASS Week.

A variety of activities were promoted throughout the week - with Years 7-12 involved in Homeroom quizzes, learning fun facts such as ‘on this day in history…’, and on Wednesday at lunchtime there was an epic puzzle challenge on the Chapel lawn – where teams fiercely competed to be the fastest to complete the jigsaw puzzle Map of Australia. Who knew jigsaws could lead to such intense competition!

With the sun shining brightly, the HASS festivities came to a conclusion on Friday. Two talented student bands, Contraband and Golden Table, entertained staff and students on the Chapel lawn - whilst the HASS department staff cooked a sausage sizzle.

I recently read an interview with Martin Scorsese who said: “Now more than ever we need to talk to each other, to listen to each other and understand how we see the world”.  And this is exactly what the study of humanities brings. HASS provides students with the ability to reflect and examine the world in which we live - to look beyond our boundaries – and be ‘men and women for others’.

A big thank you to the committed and passionate Humanities’ staff.

Japanese classes experience the culinary delights of Japan

Last week our Year 7 Japanese classes used their creative, linguistic, and culinary skills to engage with Japanese. The students made and decorated lovely ‘onigiri’ rice balls before saying ‘itadakimasu’ and tasting their creations.

In addition, our Year 9 Japanese class practiced their cooking skills by making a delicious, traditional ‘obento’ or Japanese style lunch box with miso chicken and crunchy salad. All the student really enjoyed this experience and are to be commended on their excellent behaviour.

Arigatoo gozaimashita (many thanks) to Aghdasi Sensei and Mann Sensei for organising and showing them these lovely dishes.

Research project undertaken by Dr Greg Hine of Notre Dame

The John XXIII Mathematics department have been asked to participate in a research project carried out by Dr Gregory Hine of Notre Dame.

The research project investigates why capable Year 11 and Year 12 students do not enroll in higher-level mathematics courses. The significance of this study rests upon the belief that higher-level mathematics course are valuable courses for students to enroll in.

The project involves a survey for Year 11 and 12 students to complete in week 17, when they return from examinations. Please note that student participation in this survey is voluntary.

All parents of Year 11 and 12 students received an email from Mrs Jo Friel this week, regarding the details of this project.

Thank you in anticipation for your support of this project, which should provide valuable results. It will also allow students to benefit from seeing practical uses of Statistics.

Champions League Basketball

On Tuesday 25 May, our Champions League Senior Boys Basketball team competed in the ACC semi-final game against John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School. It was a tough game against some incredible state players which our boys played a strong four quarters against. We are so proud that our team made the semi-final yet again this year and look forward to preparing to come back even stronger in 2022.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Conor Bradley, Year 7, who has made the 2021 WA 12s Basketball State Team.
