Term 3 Canvas Update for Parents/Carers
We are proud to say our implementation of Canvas as our new Learning Management System (LMS) is on schedule despite the challenges 2020 has thrown at us.
Currently, every subject at Surf Coast Secondary College has had a Course created which is used to deliver learning tasks to our students. We appreciate the patience our community has shown during this significant learning curve.
All tasks and assessments are visible to parents and carers, as is the feedback provided on student submissions. We strongly encourage parents to regularly check their student’s Markbook pages regularly.
Our use of this system will improve over time and I would like to outline some of the planned improvements (and current workarounds):
Areas of Canvas we are looking to improve moving forward:
- We understand that notifications from Canvas can be overwhelming, and not always relevant. Whilst we make improvements, there is a 'Notification' option for each course you are enrolled in that allows you to make adjustments specific to that Course.
- We are aware that the link to Canvas when clicked on from a computer does not load the correct parent/carer login page. Until this is improved, please continue to login via the dedicated parent/carer login page
- Parents and carers can see all work that has been submitted in the “Marks” section of a course. Please be advised that the percentages at the bottom of the Marks page are not currently used in any form of formal reporting (shown in yellow box in image below), and are automated values. In 2021 these percentages will be adjusted to be a more accurate reflection of performance. The important results lie within the submissions themselves, as that is where both informal and formal feedback is provided to students. To support families interacting and engaging with Canvas we will be putting together some support content. This content will focus on navigating the system, managing your settings, interpreting information and other relevant areas of interest and importance. Keep an eye out for the articles in upcoming newsletters.

Each week we will go through interactive steps to enhance your job opportunities. For example; resume writing, presenting, interview skills, volunteering and road mapping.

Wow, what an incredible community we are a part of!
It really warms our hearts to know there are so many people out there whom are willing to give, even during these current times. As the Salvos are now taking perishables, Peachs are donating each week, and sent out over 100 care packages to families in Torquay.
