Supporting learners to become independent writers

At Holy Family, students from Prep to Year 6 work through the Teaching and Learning Cycle to develop their skills in Writing. The Teaching and Learning Cycle explicitly supports learners to become independent writers. It involves four key stages:

Building the Field

Students are supported to build a shared understanding of the topic and content of what they will be writing about and to become familiar with key vocabulary.

Modelling and Deconstruction

Students become familiar with the purpose, organisation and language features of the particular genre (e.g. a narrative, an information report, a persuasive text, etc.).

Joint Construction

Teachers and students jointly construct a text.

Independent Construction:

Students use the modelled and jointly constructed texts as a guide for writing their own text independently.
