What's happening in the 5/6 classrooms

Over the past couple of weeks, the Senior students have been demonstrating their resilience in adapting to new and challenging learning situations. Fantastic effort to all of you, especially our parent community who have been supporting the learning of children. Thank you.

In reading, the students have been focussing on the strategy of distinguishing between cause and effect; the what and the why of what we are reading. To help students understand cause and effect there are clue words that signal to the reader that they will require to use this strategy including: "such as, because, so, consequently, therefore, thus, and since."

Students are also learning how to write an information report by exploring the structures and features of this text. The students learned how to write a topic sentence which includes the main idea as well as supporting sentences backing up the main topic sentence. Structural text features including headings, subheadings, paragraphing and glossaries have been explored.

In Mathematics, the students have been very busy creating simple budgets, identifying GST amounts on receipts, as well as calculating change to the nearest five cents, and revising comparing decimal fractions. In addition, they have commenced a new unit on learning more about length, area and perimeter.

In Inquiry learning the students have been exploring different ways to present their learning while exploring Space. These include options such as creating a poster with commentary, as a news report or google slide presentation.

The students have continued learning about persistence as an important disposition for success. Here they have engaged in activities to help them learn about having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed one.

The Holy Trinity continued to be our focus over these past few weeks. The students were required to use a thinking tool “See Think Wonder” to guide their thinking about God the Father, God The Son and God The Holy Spirit. Our morning prayers have been inspiring many students.
