Health & Physical Education with Mrs Wall

This term has looked a little different in Health and Physical Education classes but I am so proud of how the students adapted and continued to contribute in class from the comfort of their own homes.  For the 6 weeks and 8 weeks for SLC, we focused on a fitness and nutrition unit, having been in this industry for 10 plus years, I was really excited to share more of my knowledge in these areas with the children and hopefully influence some of their choices in the future.

Over the remote learning period we were able to cover a range of topics.  In Prep/JLC, we had fun learning lots of different exercises and doing these in different types of circuits, while playing bingo and home scavenger hunts.  In health we learnt about what an everyday and a sometimes food is, we talked about what a healthy lunch box could look like and talked about our body and how it is changing.

In MLC, we enjoyed playing virtual rock, paper, scissors, would you rather games and learning many various exercises we can do in different ways.  In health, we learnt about the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and what foods we should be aiming to eat everyday, more often and sometimes. We learnt how to record our food in a diary and how this helps us understand what foods we may be forgetting to eat and designed posters that could influence our friends to make healthier choices.

In SLC, we learnt about our heart rate and why it is important to keep track of it to measure the intensity of our exercise. We learnt different types of exercises and how to perform it correctly and how to use them in different circuits based on time, repetitions and intensity. In health, we talked further about the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, we recorded our eating over a period of time by keeping a food diary, we talked about food advertising and begun to learn about reading food labels,  The students were quite interested in this and have asked to learn more, so I look forward to creating more discussion around this in Terms 3 and 4.

Finally back at school, it has been lovely to see the students' faces and smiles in person and help them move in different ways with some freedom.  We have finished off the term learning Indigenous Games, reviewing some throwing and catching skills, and finally with a skipping unit which has been great to see so many students motivated to try new ways with the rope, motivated to get their names on our jump rope club boards and keen to continue to practise during lunch times.   This has led to us forming a skipping club in Term 3 and participating in Jump Rope for Heart, and a “Jump Off’ Day towards the end of Term 3. More details to follow next term.

I encourage the children to continue to practise the skills they have developed this term during the holidays, have discussions about the health topics we have covered and most of all have fun moving and spending time with their family.
