Term 3, Week 3

Home Learning

Home Learning

First of all, we would like to thank the Grade 6 cohort for a smooth transition back into Home Learning. It has been great to see the students in their Google Meet sessions and all the students have come back to "school" ready and raring to go. Please read through all the information included in this weekly Newsletter as well as the Compass Newsfeed, as it contains more specific information about Home Learning. We will also share this information through posts on the Grade 6 Cohort Google Classroom.

We thank you for your continued support and please don't hesitate to contact us via compass with any questions or queries.

GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:

Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. This term we will be running more small group Google Meet sessions. It is an expectation that your child attends their sessions each week.

English

Reading

This week Grade 6 will be learning different strategies to summarise texts. Summarising teaches students how to discern the most important ideas in a text, how to ignore irrelevant information, and how to integrate the central ideas in a meaningful way. Teaching students to summarise improves their memory for what is read. Summarization strategies can be used in almost every content area. Students will summarise short texts using their favourite summarising  strategy.

Writing

This is the beginning of our new writing unit called ‘The Writing Process’. This unit will take students through the process of planning, drafting, revising, and polishing a narrative piece.

We will start with two weeks of planning lessons where classes study a story arc, read and analyse a sample story, and brainstorm topics until students settle on one for their own piece of writing. Then, we will move into workshop mode, followed by independent writing time.

Mathematics

We will continue with our focus on Fractions. This week, we will be looking at find fractions of whole amounts and then how to use this knowledge in problem solving tasks. Included in the slides are extension and early finisher activities for students who work through the tasks quickly.

Unit of Inquiry

This week students will research Science Experiments that they can conduct at home.

Students will be learning how to write a Science Method correctly, which will then support their experiment. Students will record their experiment and explain their method as this will be uploaded at the end of the week.

Contact

We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.

Reminders

Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day, both in the morning and again in the afternoon, to see if new information or tasks have been added.

Specialist Team

The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students and sharing this with students. Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.

Hearing Unit

Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
