Welcoming your child

Year 7 2021

Ensuring your child is prepared for Year 7 in 2021 will help them feel organised, more comfortable with the transition and increase their independence. If you have a child starting Year 7 next year, you can help them get organised by:

Setting expectations – they will have different teachers for different subjects and will move to different rooms throughout the day. They will need to take their bag with them as them move around the school and need to be organised with what equipment they need each day.

Talking to them about following a timetable and bell times.

Introducing them to different organisational tools and how to use them – they will be using a diary to record assessment and homework details, but may also like to create a planner next year to ensure tasks are completed on time by considering other commitments, like sports training or music lessons.

Establishing good habits – getting into a routine now will build long-term habits. Students need to ensure they are at school on time and need to consider the best time to wake up, how long it takes to get ready and travel time needed.

Already have a child in high school?

Parents know that each child is an individual and one child may be independent while another needs more support and guidance. When talking to your child, discuss these ideas for being prepared for high school.  Even students who are organised in primary school may need some extra support as they make this important transition.
