From the Acting Principal

Matthew Vines

I am grateful for…

The Carnegie Primary School community and how inclusive and supportive they are! Positive psychology and gratitude is something I deeply value, and being mindful of actions or events that you are thankful for has a long term impact on wellbeing. Gratitude and mindfulness is a practice I encourage with staff and students. This week I am most grateful for the welcome I received to this very special community, thank you everyone!

Welcome back to Term 4 and thank you!

Welcome back to all our students and families to a big, action packed Term 4. When I first joined Carnegie Primary I sent all our families a post on Compass introducing myself, and I wish to share the same message here.

The Carnegie community truly embodies the value of ‘welcoming’, and the staff, students, and parents could not have been more supportive and inviting. I already have a sense of how fortunate I am to be leading such a wonderful school. Karen Bentata-Grimm, as Assistant Principal, has been a great support in helping me transition into the role. I wanted to take a moment to share something lovely with you all. On Monday, at assembly I asked the students to find me at recess or lunch time and share what they think makes the school special. While there was a huge amount of responses, the three ideas that came up again and again were “my caring friends”, “my teachers who listen to me”, and “the school is fun and I am always happy.” These responses speak to the quality of the community that has been created under Ms Jones and Mrs Grimm’s leadership, and I am honoured to be a part of it. As acting Principal my job is to support everyone to have an amazing term to finish this year. Please do not hesitate to come and see me, and if you see me in the yard in the morning I would love you to come up and say hi.

School Mural

We would like to acknowledge Uncle Steve Ulula Parker, who visited our school to work with our year 6 students to create the amazing mural that you can see out in front of our assembly space. We look forward to welcoming Uncle Steve, when he returns to add the finishing touches to the mural and to explain the meaning behind the symbols that were incorporated in the design. If you see a year 6 student ask them to show you where they have placed their hands on the mural!

2023 Staffing and Grade Structures

We are well under way with our 2023 planning. Thank you to all our families that completed the 2023 intentions on Compass, this really helps with our understanding of student numbers to inform planning. We know that Compass can be difficult to navigate at times. If you did not manage to complete the form on Compass and you know that you do not plan to stay enrolled at Carnegie Primary School for 2023 for any reason, please let the office know as soon as possible.

Sun Smart Reminder

A reminder that it is so important for our students to be wearing their hats in the yard and wearing SPF 30 sunscreen during these hotter months. Please remember to name all school hats with a permanent marker as we find many unnamed hats in our school and have difficulty returning them to their owners. Students need to wear their school hats during outdoor PE lessons, recess and lunch times and when on outdoor excursions.

World Teachers Day

World Teachers’ Day is held internationally on Tuesday 5 October. As it falls during the term  holidays in many parts of Australia, we celebrate a little later. In Australia it will be held on Friday, 28th October. World Teachers’ Day is a chance to recognise and celebrate the teachers who are making, or have made, an impact in our lives. Whether you're a current student, have children in school, or have been out of school for many years, World

Teachers’ Day is a chance to say, ‘thank you’. Reaching out to your child’s teacher to thank them for the work that they do means a great deal, so please consider passing on any feedback to our staff to show your appreciation.

Concert USB

If your child attended our incredible school concert at the end of term 2, they should have brought home a USB containing the concert last week. You are now able to share the fantastic songs the students sang with members of your family who were not able to attend the concert evening. We hope you enjoy watching the show again.

Swimming

Our year 3 - 6 students are currently participating in the first swimming program we have had since 2019. The program for these students is 5 days of lessons being held at GESAC. Students and teachers remarked how smoothly the first day of lessons ran yesterday. It was lovely to see students proudly wearing their CPS swim caps as they went to board the buses! Thank you to Mr Pollard for all of your preparation to ensure students are able to significantly benefit from their lessons.

Our prep – year 2 students will participate in their swimming lessons later this term. Their program is 9 days in duration and will also be held at GESAC. School swimming lessons cover swimming skills and water safety.

Year 5 Camp

At this time next week, our year 5 students will be eagerly getting ready for their 3 day camp. This year, camp is being held at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. The 3 day camp is a fantastic opportunity for the Year 5 children to learn about the Gold Rush, build resilience, confidence and teamwork skills, as well as experience many wonderful learning experiences at Sovereign Hill.  Highlights being gold panning, a mine tour, a light show and of course the famous lolly shop! Thank you to Ms Remfry for organising the camp and to Ms Harley, Mrs Miller, Ms Taylor, Mrs Slattery, Miss Schiano and Mr Pollard for offering to attend camp next week. We hope you create many happy memories with this group of students.

Year 1 Walk

Our year 1 students visited the post office in Koornang Road today to post their beautiful letters. Their excitement was contagious as they shared what they had written to their families. I hope the letters all arrive safely in your letter boxes over the next few days.
