Hello Prep Families!
We have had an exciting fortnight of learning and activities. In the classroom, we have been learning about the /wh/ sound, reading and comparing Pamela Allen books, practising reading smoothly, exploring 3D shapes and skip counting.
In our Intergrated unit we have been exploring how people impact the environment and comparing what past and present environments have in common. We worked together and made a mural representing our learnings.
Have a great weekend.

Grade 1
The Grade 1’s have been getting straight back into learning this term!
We have been reading different Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories and talking about what we can learn from them. The students have also been revising and extending their understanding of addition and subtraction strategies in Maths.
A note was sent to families via Compass regarding our upcoming Grade 1 Dinner. This will be held on Wednesday 7th December! The purpose of this is to celebrate finishing a successful year at school and to also build independence leading up to the Grade 2 sleepover, 3/4 and 5/6 camps. Please save the date and more information will be provided shortly.
We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! :)

Grade 2
Year 2 Sleepover
First week of Term 4 was so busy getting ready for our Sleepover!
We had so much fun eating pizza for dinner, croissants for breakfast, and hotdogs for lunch. We played games, went for a night walk with torches and watched the flying foxes (bats) fly overhead. We slept in our classrooms and generally kept some of the teachers awake for hours past lights out! It was great!!!
Here are some of our photos!

What’s been happening in the 5/6 area?
In Literacy, we have been reading Malala most days. We have been answering questions based on the chapter we read and then we provide evidence for how you got that answer. Then we need to write a summary about what happened in the chapter. We decided to read Malala when we were learning about girls' education, it made sense because it was kind of like a big part of the topic girls’ education.
When I read Malala I am very grateful for a life like this because not many people even eat food or go to school. It also reminds me to stay brave and resilient because Malala got shot but she always stayed brave and she just prayed for the best. Most of the time she stayed calm and I am pretty sure she has helped people to overcome her fears. This is truly an inspiring story for lots of people and if you haven't read you should try reading it. I think this is a reminder we should all be grateful for what we have and to stay brave.
In writing, we have been learning about poetry. Last week, we learnt about apostrophe poems which, contrary to what the name suggests, are not about apostrophes. Instead these poems are about people, objects and animals that are not actually with you. They are almost like a poetic letter to said animal or person. We all have been writing about animal experiences, and describing the event. This week we have been looking at how tone can change the meaning of pieces of poetry. For example; if I said “I didn’t say you stole my red hat.” That has a very different meaning to if I said “I didn’t say you stole my red hat.” So by using line breaks, bolding, hyphens and other strategies we can make the readers of our poems interpret our poems in different ways.
In maths, we have been exploring chance and probability where we have learnt how to read chance as a number, percentage and fraction. We did different activities exploring different aspects of chance. We learnt how spinners work and how to calculate different chance events, such as dice, coins and other things. We also did an activity where we calculated the chance of rolling six sixes on a die in a row. We used a diagram that was like a tree. It works such that, say you have to land three tails in a row. In your first flip, you have a 50% chance of landing one, Which means that for you two outcomes in the first flip. This means you have two outcomes for the two outcomes from the first roll, so now the chance is ¼, or 25%. This means that there are two outcomes for the four outcomes of flip two, which pretty much means that the chance is ⅛. For the six sixes one, we worked out an algorithm for the equation, which was 6^6. The answer to this question is 1/46656
During the end of last term and the beginning of this one, the 5/6’s have been creating badges and t-shirt designs to represent one of these five large issues that we’ve explored: energy poverty, girls’ education, indigeneous literacy, global citizenship and solar power. In our groups, we all co-wrote information reports exploring these issues and we also had the choice between creating a picture book or a comic to tell a story. In our groups we planned, drafted and published whatever option we picked. Individually, the grade 5/6‘s have made infographics as well to explain the issue in a different way. Also, save the date. The grade 5/6’s will be holding stalls on Friday in week 5 on November the 4th, to sell the t-shirts and badges we have made and to share our learning.
Finally, on Tuesday, all the 5/6‘s also completed 12.2 laps of the running track which totalled 1.29 km - to represent the 129 million girls without access to education today. It was a great afternoon and we’re so proud to have supported such a great cause.
