World Mental Health Week

This weeks Tribes session was centred around this weeks focus as it is World Mental Health Week.

Throughout the sessions staff talked about how mental health affects how we think, feel & behave. It affects how we feel about ourselves and other people and it can affect our day-to-day lives. When you have good mental health you are able to cope with the ups and downs of life. You will enjoy spending time with friends and have hobbies and interests you like. We sometimes call good mental health mental well-being.

It was shared with students that when they are feeling sad, or frustrated and need to calm down they can get out things from their 'self soothing bag/box' to help them reduce feelings of worry or sadness. If they find yourself feeling anxious, stressed out, or down, you can turn to your self-soothe box to help manage your feelings and feel more relaxed.

Today they started to decorate their self soothe box/bag so they could use this at home. They were encouraged to add things into their box or bag that would assist them to calm down such as pictures of things they like doing, photos of places they had visited or special people, fidget toys, colouring pages, pencils, paper to draw on, some craft items such as loom bands. One student mentioned that they would put an old PS4 game that they don't play anymore, but they still like. Many staff commented on how they would place this in a 'secret location' so their siblings couldn't get to it, that they would place it under their bed for when they needed to access it easily.

If you have 30 minutes spare this weekend I am sure they would love extra time to 'jazz' the outside of their bag/box with stickers, photos, magazine pictures, words that make them happy, names of their pets etc.

On two occasions this week the school has welcomed visitors into the school. On both occasions they have let us know how welcomed they felt and how kind students have been.

As one visitor approached the door at the main office with his hands full, a student had opened the door for him so he could balance what he was carrying and not have to juggle his things and try to open the door. Thankyou to this student.

On a second occasion, 2 girls warmly welcomed another visitor at the door as they walked past the front door. Thankyou for making these visitors so welcomed.

If yo see anyone else showing kindness please let me know and I am happy to share wuch wonderful acts of kindness.
