Class Celebrations
Grade Prep
Reading
Our reading focus this week has been 'visualising'. To visualise we use the authors words to help us make a picture in our mind. By drawing a picture it helps students to better understand what they are reading. The foundation students did a fantastic job of this as you can see by the pictures below.
Maths
In maths we have revisited addition and subtraction. Students used good problem solving strategies such as making it, drawing a picture and writing it as a sum to find multiple solutions to open ended problems.
Grade 1
Inquiry
In Inquiry this term, grade one students have been curiously learning about the concept of "Then and Now". Students have been comparing things from the past with things from now and in line with this Inquiry topic grade one students, teachers and parent helpers visited Sovereign Hill on Wednesday of week 4. The day was jam packed with gold panning, meeting characters from the 1850’s gold rush, an education session called "Then and Now" in which students learnt about heritage clothing, games and how life was back in the 1850's and much more. So much fun was had and there were a lot of tired people on the bus ride home!
As part of our Inquiry unit, students will be bringing home a Past and Present Interview task in which they will be asked to interview a person of choice about how life was when they were young. The students will use this information to then present a Speaking and Listening Task, presenting what they learnt to the class in a short presentation. Students will have the student success criteria (used for when students plan their presentation at home so they know what is expected of them) and interview proforma sent home on Friday. If you have any questions, please speak to your classroom teacher.
Grade 2
As a part of our term 4 inquiry topic 'How can we help take responsibility to look after our environment?' the Grade 2s visited Ecolinc in Bacchus Marsh.
Grade 3
READING CELEBRATION
Over the last couple of weeks, the Grade 3's have been using different strategies to help comprehend a text. Students have been predicting, questioning, clarifying, summarising and visualising. We have created these Fab 5 booklets to show our thinking.
Grade 4
Learning Snapshot
In reading, the grade 4's have investigated how clues in the plot help us to understand important themes and messages from the literature that we read. Additionally, the students have been working on the close reading strategy and finding specific evidence in the text that helps with meaning.
In writing, we have continued our focus on persuasive devices and have looked at how writer's using devices such as rhetorical questions, emotive language, facts and statistics and repetition to engage and persuade the reader.
In maths, the students have focused on the topics of time and length over the last two weeks. This includes looking at concepts such as converting between units of time and length as well as how time zones vary across Australia and the world.
In other news, the garden program continues to be a raging success (see photos), it's 4A's turn next. Also there'll be notes coming out soon for our camp to Lyrebird Park and our excursion to Scienceworks.
Grade 5
For Inquiry, the Grade 5 students have been participating in "The Great Tomato Cycle", whereby they investigate how tomatoes are grown, cultivated, eaten and planted again for the nest season. The students have also explored the role of permaculture and companion planting thanks to the wise tutelage of Diedre, Margaret and Leigh.
As part of Positive Education in Term 4, the Grade 5s will be analysing the results from the Voice and Aspirations survey and setting goals for the remainder of the term. We will also be celebrating improvements to the data and looking ahead to next year and beyond.
Grade 6
This week, our Grade 6 debating team participated in their final debate for the year. Throughout the year, our Grade 6 students competed against Geelong Lutheran, Grovedale, Roslyn, and Chilwell Primary Schools. It was an amazing learning experience for our students, and they now can pursue their interest further as they transition to their respective high schools.
Over the past fortnight, our Grade 6 students have been creating their own digital Poetry Projects. It has been an extremely engaging, and fun opportunity for our students to explore and experiment with different styles of writing, and use of descriptive language through the use of digital technology.
