Smart Watches - School Mode

We thought it opportune to get in touch with you regarding the use of smart watches in the classroom and alert you to the school mode function available with Spacetalk watches. While Spacetalk watches are advertised as having all the benefits of a smart phone without the dangers or distractions, the use of smart watches can interfere with learning as students can message each other and their parents during the school day.

Devices should only be used as a timepiece and step counter during school hours. Please remind children who wear mobile devices to school that any issues should be reported to a teacher first and then in cases (such as illness) when parents need to be contacted, this is done through the school office. We also ask that parents remind children that wearable devices not be used to message or call during school hours.

School Mode is a special app feature that allows you to control the functions on your child’s Spacetalk watch during school hours (i.e. between 8.45 and 3.15). and we would appreciate it if parents could please make use of this function.

A reminder that Smart/Mobile phones are not allowed at school and will be left at the office until the end of the school day if found to be in the possession of a student.

Thank you for your understanding and support,

The Barwon Heads PS Teaching Team

Student Leadership Process 2023

The purpose of this document is to outline the ‘School Captain’ and ‘Student Leadership’ process for 2023. The process will involve this year’s Grade 5 students as they prepare to transition to Grade 6 and develop their leadership profile.

To begin the process the current School Captains will speak with our Grade 5 students about their role. They will pass on their experiences and any advice to assist the students who want to nominate for the school captain process.

The following steps outline the ‘School Captain’ process for Barwon Heads Primary School:

  • All 2022 Grade 5 students can nominate themselves if they wish to take part in the process
  • The Grade 5 cohort of students, along with the Grade 5 teachers and specialist teachers will then vote on who they think will be a suitable School Captain. The top 16 students from this process will move on to the final stage of the selection process.

The final stage consists of 2 tasks:

Teamwork task- The candidates will be tasked with a group challenge. This will consist of making a presentation at assembly and writing a Newsletter piece for the school community. The topic of the presentation will link to our school PERMA values.

Interview- Each candidate will participate in an interview where they will answer questions to establish why they would be a suitable school captain in 2023. The panel will consist of the school Principal and the current school captains.

The final decision will be made and agreed on by the panel.

House Captain process

This process will take place at the beginning of the 2023 school year. It will also be one of the first major responsibilities for the incumbent school captains. They along with the school Principal will form the panel that oversees the process.

Students wishing to be a House Captain are tasked with the creation of a digital presentation (Video). The topic of the presentation will be about themselves, highlighting the qualities they possess that make them a suitable house captain.

The final decision will be made and agreed on by the panel.

Other Leadership roles

This year we have been fortunate enough to have many school initiatives led by our Grade 6 leaders. Many of these have been developed as an extension of the students’ strengths and interests. This year’s leaders will get the opportunity to share their leadership experiences with the current grade 5’s.

Early in 2023 the grade 6 students will be able to sign up to initiatives that have been run in the past and will also have an opportunity to develop new initiatives in 2023.

*All Grade 6 students will have a leadership role in 2023
