Aboriginal Education

HOMEWORK GROUP
Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student Homework Group is well underway with our largest enrolment of students since its inception in 2020! At homework group, students are supported with their homework activities, home reading and other school related projects, as well as participating in games and cultural activities. A highlight of the afternoon is the healthy afternoon snack, catered by Sarah Blaker and our canteen staff! Thank you to our parents and carers for supporting this great opportunity, and to our wonderful staff who volunteer their time to supervise students after school.
ABORIGINAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE PARENT MEETING
Thank you to the parents, carers and families who were able to attend our first Aboriginal Education Meeting on Wednesday afternoon. It was a great opportunity to continue strengthening our home-school partnership. It was also a time to plan curricular and extra-curricular activities and events and continue moving forward as a community to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This year we will be working together to:
- engage our families in our school by ensuring Oak Flats Public is a culturally safe space
- design a yarning circle space with students and families
- ensure Indigenous perspectives are authentically implemented across the curriculum
- strengthen student engagement in cultural activities through Mudjingaal groups and during special events
- promote Aboriginal student leadership across the school
- complete our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)
- begin working on a draft of our school Aboriginal Education Policy
We look forward to sharing our progress along the way. The next parent meeting will take place in Week 6 of Term 2.
PLP BREAKFAST
What a fantastic morning we had with parents, carers, families and students on Wednesday having a yarn over breakfast and beginning the process of creating Personalised Learning Pathways (PLPs). A huge thank you to Sarah Blaker and the OFPS canteen for providing the delicious spread of fruit, muffins and everyone’s favourite - bacon and egg rolls!
During our breakfast, teachers worked together with students and families to set literacy, numeracy, personal and cultural goals. The goals that have been identified in PLPs will enable teachers to implement strategies to support students to reach their full potential. PLPs will be regularly reviewed with students during the school year, with adjustments made where required, and formally evaluated each term.
Classroom teachers are in the process of contacting parents or carers who were unable to attend the breakfast to arrange an alternative time to meet and develop PLPs together.
