Kitchen Garden
This week the Year 3s began their kitchen garden program. Our focus in the kitchen was on Italian inspired recipes, and the influence of Italian migration on shaping our food in Australia. Our recipe for today was pasta bake muffins.
As our school garden is being renovated, we explored other ways of growing vegetables, using science knowledge to help find a solution to a watering problem. We conducted an experiment to determine the most appropriate material to make a wicking system where a plant seeks water from a reservoir below with the aid of a wick that transports water up from the well to the roots of the plant.
We also planted seedlings in polystyrene boxes, creating a base of scoria and water, adding mesh and soil. We inserted a small tube where water can be added, and fed to the reservoir below, where the roots will take up the water as needed.
Today we planted seedlings of cucumber, spinach, radish and lettuce.
Yr 4 Stewardship Program
The Year 4M began their Stewardship program this week, where they assume the role of stewards of our school. Our focus for the first session was determining what it means to be a steward - of the environment and in particular our school environment. This involved taking a walk around our whole school land observing all the natural and man made changes that have occurred recently.
In groups, the students worked cooperatively brainstorming ideas for maintenance and improvements to consider for our school.
Year 6 Sustainability Leaders
Our Year 6 Leaders - Charleen, Julian, Tristan and Mason hit the ground running preparing our table for the expo, and starting to organise our term events.
Currently the Year 6 leaders have initiated an audit of waste bins - each class will record how full their rubbish bin is over a 3 week period. We will then evaluate our waste and see if we can reduce the amount of plastic bin liners we use.
This term the Sustainability Leaders will lead a Clean Up Australia Day activity and towards the end of the term, a Ride2School day, where the focus is on trying to reduce the need to use the car. We will share more information on these activities in a few weeks time.
