Warrandyte Festival Parade

Hello families!

Lots of information to share today but we have lots of new families joining us this year so I wanted to provide some information about the Warrandyte PARADE, including our involvement, meeting arrangements, ‘costume’ requirements and what the students have been up to contributing to the process. I would please ask you read through the whole post.

Each year Warrandyte primary School participate in the Warrandyte Festival in different ways. The festival parade is a long-standing tradition and the school has always been involved. All students and staff are invited to participate in the parade.

The parade date is Saturday 18th March. Marshal time is 10.15 and starts at Warrandyte community centre 11am. We finish at approx 12 at Stiggants reserve. Parents are asked to accompany their children to the marshal point where Warrandyte staff will be waiting. The staff will have the student props that they will use for the parade. Parents are not part of our parade but are asked to maintain supervising distance alongside the parade.

This year’s parade theme is “Show us your colours”. Student voice has played a strong part in choosing how we present this year, as well as helping to organise different parts. Last year the students decided that we should have an underwater/coral reef theme which would fit the colours idea.

This year we will have three elements in the parade.

Kevin and the Student Bush band play on a moving vehicle. A big thanks to the McKellar family who will once again provide the truck and driver. The truck gets decorated in the theme. The year 6 team are working with Claire on this. On the morning of the parade (stay tuned for another compass alert) there is also a mini working bee to get the truck decorated.

The second element is our giant octopus on a cart “Calamari”, the name was organised by our Year 6 leaders and voted on by our students. Preparation for the float is happening with students, in particular our year 6 team led by Nikki, staff and parents.

If you are keen to assist helping put Calamari’s components together in float form, please contact me via compass or the office (I am not onsite due to a basketball injury but still working behind scenes). We will have a session during the week (when most people are available) where I will require some assistance putting Calamari together. The only skills needed are an ability to join things up with cable ties, glue and rope under my direction. We will also set aside the morning of Saturday 11th March as a possible Calamari working bee if more still needs to be done. I’ll post something further if this is required.

The last element is the students participating in the parade.  This year the grade 6 leaders have worked with me to make the decisions on ‘costuming’ and props. The students will create a headband or prop in art with Claire that they will wear in the parade. Please take note of the colours we would like the students to wear in line with their prop. Please do not go out and buy anything, close enough is fine! Or if you cannot find a suitable colour, go for blue to represent the ocean. Additionally, the school will be supplying some sparkly tunics for some of the grades to put over their own clothes.

The following grades have been allocated these sea creatures. Students will make their prop/ headband in art class, so you only need to think about the base colour clothes.

Prep S and Prep M – Rainbow fish headbands. Base colour clothes can be lots of rainbow colours and sparkles

1/2K - Octopus headbands. Base colour clothes can be green.

1/2M – Starfish headbands. Base colour clothes can be purple, pink, silver, blue.

1/2E – Seahorse headbands. Base colour clothes can be purple, green and blue.

3J – Jellyfish puppets. Base colour clothes can be pink, purple, and green, depending on colour of art.

4/5R -Stingray puppet. Base coloured clothes can be watery colours.

4/5G – Crab claws and headbands. Base coloured clothes can be red orange yellow.

6N - Coral, shells or waves. Base colour clothes matching their art.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me via Compass or the office.

Thanks
