Performing Arts News
Our new Preps recently enjoyed coming up with choreography for 'The Alphabet Rap' with their Grade 6 buddies.
The Year 1/2 students are enjoying learning to play tuned percussion and compose music on the "Boom Whackers".
The Performing Arts Unit at VSSS23 describes the annual Victorian State Schools Spectacular program is “an invaluable performing arts opportunity for Victoria’s government primary and secondary school students. It showcases and unites government school communities through working towards a common goal of more students reaching the highest level of achievement in the arts” while “ensuring kids are happy, healthy and resilient”. The program also aims to build pride in our schools.
WPS has proudly participated in every live VSSS production since 2013. This year, we will have more students than ever performing at John Cain Arena on Saturday, September 9th , with our school being represented in both Mass Choir and Mass Dance. Participation in ‘Spec’ is so highly valued amongst our students that our recent dance auditions saw 42 enthusiastic students audition for one of the 16 places! Congratulations to the 36 Year 4, 5 & 6 students who were selected for either dance or choir – and to everyone who auditioned. It was wonderful to see all students applying our school values by supporting and encouraging one another while giving their very best effort.
Our choir and dance ensembles are now looking forward to learning eight exciting songs during their weekly school rehearsals and regional hub rehearsals, before joining thousands of other talented singers, dancers, skaters, acrobats, gymnasts, and puppeteers at the arena in Term 3.
The theme for this year’s Warrandyte Festival is “Show us your colours”. After participating in the street parade down Yarra Street, Warrandyte Primary students will take to the Stiggants Reserve stage to share some of their many performing arts talents with the wider Warrandyte Community. Students from Years 1 – 6 will be invited to perform a song which celebrates this year’s festival theme and features Auslan signing - “Rainbow Connection”. This will be followed by our iconic Year 5/6 Bush Band, led by Kevin O’Mara, and featuring our new student instrumentalists playing the washboards, lagerphones, spoons, wobble boards, slap bass and coconuts! While attendance is not compulsory, it would be great to see as many students and families as possible joining in this very special community event on Saturday, March 18. Participating students will need to meet staff at the side of the stage straight after the parade (approximately 11.30am). Our performances will begin at 12 noon. Please remind students to apply sunscreen and bring a water bottle.
