Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday, is the day immediately preceding Ash Wednesday. Shrove, derived from shrive, refers to the confession of sins as a preparation for Lent, a usual practice in Europe in the Middle Ages.

Although the day is sometimes still used for self-examination and reflection, Shrove Tuesday eventually acquired the character of a carnival or festival in many places and is often celebrated with parades.

As the final day before the Lenten fast, Shrove Tuesday also has many customs pertaining to food. Pancakes are traditional in a number of countries because eggs, sugar, and fat, commonly forbidden during the Lenten fast, are used up so they will not go to waste; the day is known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday.

Staff and students celebrated the day with exactly that, the making and, eating of course, of pancakes!!

The launch of the Caritas Project Compassion Project also took place today. The theme this year is:

Working together for justice and dignity. Building together a better future for all.

Please support this great cause. Project Compassion Money Boxes will be located in the Office and classrooms for any donations. Thanking you in advance.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday, in the Christian Church, is the first day of Lent, occurring six and a half weeks before Easter (between February 4 and March 11, depending on the date of Easter). Ash Wednesday is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God and marks the beginning of the penitential Lenten season. It is commonly observed with ashes and fasting.

At St Therese, we celebrated with an Ash Wednesday Liturgy in our school hall. Staff and students received ashes on their forehead. Due to Foundation students being absent on Wednesday, they received their ashes on Thursday instead, ensuring they were included for this important liturgical event.

Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered this term for Year 3 students and any older students wishing to receive the Sacrament. The Parent & Child Workshops are scheduled for Wednesday 15th March at 5p.m & 7p.m and Thursday 16th March at 7p.m at St Agatha's Church.
