Dear Sunbury College community,
Welcome to the 2023 school year!
We have had an excellent start to the year, and it is wonderful to see such an abundance of positive energy with students embracing the range of learning, well-being and extracurricular opportunities available to them.
I would like to officially welcome our new Year 7 students and their families. We look forward to working in partnership with you over the next six years. I enjoyed spending a couple of days getting to know the Year 7 students at Year 7 Camp on Phillip Island last week. It was great to see the positive way our students interacted with each other and their teachers and the positive way they engaged with challenges.
Along with our new Year 7 students, I would also like to welcome to our College, the many new students in Year 8 to Year 12. We trust you will form new friendships with your peers and have success in your learning here with us.
2022 Year 12 Graduates
This is the first newsletter since our 2022 Year 12 students graduated. Our 2022 Year 12 VCAL and VCE students both had a very successful year. This was a group of students with amazing resilience, who had spent significant time during Year 10 and Year 11 in remote and flexible learning. These students showed great commitment right up to their last class and exam. Many of our VCAL students literally finished classes and walked straight into apprenticeships with local employers the next week. This was due to student commitment and the positive connections they made with local business owners through their VCAL work placements during the previous two years. Our VCE students also applied themselves with great rigour, accessing help from each other and our dedicated and skilled teachers over the course of the year. Our VCE completion rate was above the state average at 99% and we saw a significant rise in our Unit 3 and 4 mean study score in 2022, increasing from 26 in 2021 to 28 in 2022. Most of these students have now moved into their chosen pathways of apprenticeships, traineeships, university and TAFE courses and employment. I am confident they will transition successfully into the next stage of their life.
Safe and Respectful Learning Environment
Sunbury College works hard to build and maintain a safe and respectful learning environment. Over the past twelve months, the school has updated many of our school policies and these can be found on the college website- https://www.sunburysc.vic.edu.au/college/policies-reports/. Included in the policies is the Bullying Prevention Policy which outlines Sunbury College’s commitment to providing a safe and respectful learning environment. Bullying will not be tolerated. The Bullying Prevention Policy also outlines how incidents can be reported and how they are investigated and responded to. To further enhance our commitment to safe and respectful learning environments, there will be a whole school focus this year on embedding School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS).
School Council Nominations
Our School Council has and will continue to play the important role of assisting in the efficient governance of the school, enhancing the educational opportunities of our students, and ensuring that decisions affecting our students are made in the best interest of the students. If parents, carers or students would like to nominate for a position on School Council in 2023, please collect a nomination form at the school front office and submit it by 4.00 pm on Thursday 9 March.
Best wishes
