Grade 5/6 Students

Celebrating our fantastic Fives and sensational Sixes!

5/6A - Miss Lee

The students in 56A have enjoyed the improvement in weather this week after so many days of rain and cold weather. Although a day out in the garden with Dave last week was very absolutely freezing, the students enjoyed working in small groups to construct frames for our beans to grow on. Here we have a group strengthening their fine motor skills by manipulating some pretty strong wire. In the classroom, there has been so much going on and the students have engaged with our Geography unit most enthusiastically. We attended an incursion with the CFA last week and learned so much about how the geography of the land and those living on it can be impacted by bushfires. Here we have Rafael and Nick putting together their understandings of how natural disasters affect the geography of the world by investigating bushfires. Lots of great thinking and generous sharing of ideas was the theme of this week.

5/6B - Mr Sankovic

As part of our Geography unit we have started looking at natural disasters and how they help shape our geography and are shaped by geography. To launch this part of our unit, we were lucky enough to have a presentation from a member of the Kinglake CFA who spoke to all of the 5/6s about the Black Saturday Bushfires, and all the factors that lead to the cause, spread and damage of fires. The students were engrossed in the presentation and learnt a lot about fire safety and topography

Grand Designs

This week students of 5/6C have started to develop their own floor plan for their dream house. After previously researching what floor plans look like, students have been encouraged to pick irregular shapes to figure out the area and perimeter of each of their rooms. Here is Liam P's floor plan where he has even included a few circular rooms!

Reading Roles

Students have continued with their literacy circle roles within reading and put their brains together to even come up with some new roles to complete each week. They came up with the role of critic where they review each chapter. Here is Angie's review of chapters 14-18 of her novel 'Goldfish Boy'

 5/6D - Mr Jared

We have been designing houses in Maths, with an aim to make them 3D using the Sketch-up computer program. Here is Suchitha's draft for her new house!!! Fancy!

We have been looking at inspirational speeches and this quote means that in order to do big things well, you have to do little things well....like making your bed. It also means that you start the day with one task completed, which builds to many tasks completed.
