Term 2 Week 5

Feature News - Performing Arts & Visual Arts Excursion

Selamat Siang Parents and Families,

In Week 5, the Independence Centre visited Hamer Hall and the Lume Exhibition in Melbourne City as part of our collaborative Performing Arts and Visual Arts Excursion.

We started our day at Hamer Hall to watch Melbourne Symphony Orchestra present Saint - Sa'ëns’ Zoological Fantasy : 'Carnival of the Animals'.  The performance was opened with an Acknowledgement of Country, sung by one of the puppeteers. Students and teachers alike were blown away by the orchestra and puppeteers choreography as the animals danced and frolicked across the stage. Similarly, students have been creating their own musical compositions during Performing Arts at school. The orchestra was very entertaining and interactive - they even had to watch out for the animals stealing the conductor's baton!

After an incredible performance of Carnival of the Animals, the 3/4s made their way to our next stop at the Lume Exhibition. Not only did we see Van Gogh's famous art brought to life, we also became part of the Art and even tried drawing some of Van Gogh's famous pieces! There were so many incredible different spaces including the directed drawing room, Van Gogh's life sized bedroom painting, the Sunflower room and of course the Main arena, where his art works were projected onto the walls and floors. The immersive art moved to the sounds of different orchestral and calm music tracks, demonstrating the strong connection between rhythm and movement of Music and Visual Art.

Students also reflected on their learning by sketching and answering questions in their booklets as we moved through the exhibition. Some students compared and contrasted the night sky drawn by Van Gogh and the night sky depicted by the First Nations Peoples of Australia. Did you know that Van Gogh made several versions of his famous bedroom painting? Students also drew their own bedrooms and challenged themselves to draw these from a birds-eye view. We all had such a wonderful time but still have one unanswered question ...How many sunflowers were there in the sunflower room?

Thank you to all of the 3/4 team, parents and friends for your support for this excursion and we look forward to many more collaborative and immersive experiences ahead!

Terima Kasih,

Community Connections:

In our Local community, the Whitehorse Pioneers will be hosting their first 'Indigenous Round' this Saturday, to commemorate Sorry Day. This round is to highlight the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people make to the wider community. For the occasion, the club has had the help of past players  to create an Indigenous jumper incorporating Whitehorse colours and a traditional print. Both the women and senior men's side will be wearing them on the day and there will be a traditional Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country to open the day.
