Leadership Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya!

What an eventful week it was in the Leadership Centre! Congratulations to all the Year 5 students who completed their final NAPLAN Assessment last Monday. Everyone demonstrated great positivity and perseverance throughout. It was a very exciting end to the week too, with the beginning of I.C.E!

In Maths, students continued to build on their understanding of fractions and decimals. Throughout the week, students worked within Mini Master Classes to practise recording and locating fractions and decimals on a number line. Students explored strategies such as paper folding, measuring and dividing, drawing visual representations and using a range of concrete materials, including using metre rulers and MAB tens to explore decimals to tenths and creating magnified number lines to explore locating decimals to hundredths and even thousandths on a number line. To end the week, students completed the ‘Everything about my fraction’ Rich Assessment Task which is designed for students to showcase what they’ve learnt and achieved over the course of this unit.

In Literacy, students have continued to learn about various types of poetry and have spent time constructing their own. Poetry helps us in understanding different perspectives - teaching and learning from poetry can help everyone respect and understand the viewpoints of others across the globe. Last week the 5/6 students created a digital ‘Poet’s Portfolio’ that includes handy hints, links and examples of many different poetry styles, including couplet, quatrain, limerick, cinquain, haiku and many more. Over the course of the week, students have explored these poetry styles and have created poems on various topics of their choosing. At the conclusion of the unit, students will choose their favourite poem to enter into the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards which is Australia’s longest running annual poetry competition for school children. Students will be showing their poetry work in a very interesting and creative way on Open Night this Thursday so be sure to come check out the display!

In Wellbeing, students discussed the meaning of self-care and the importance of self-care strategies. By incorporating self-care activities into our regular routine, like going for a walk, socialising with friends, listening to music, talking with a trusted person, you give your body and mind time to rest, reset and rejuvenate so you can avoid or reduce stress and anxiety. As such, it is important to check in with yourself to identify how you are currently feeling so you can implement appropriate strategies! What self-care strategies do you implement? Are there strategies you can identify and complete as a whole family activity?

Have a great week!
