Refugee Week

Healing...

Refugee Week is an annual celebration, occurring from June 19 to June 25. The aim of Refugee Week is to raise awareness about the plight of refugees and to celebrate the achievements of refugees in our community.

At JBHS we were lucky enough to secure the talented Mr Simon Shahin, who we invited to our school to speak with some of our students about his experiences.

Mr Shahin's story shed light on the many challenges faced by refugees who are forced to flee their countries for safety. Our school community thanks Mr Shahin for helping us to gain further insights into the significance of the plight of all refugees. His wonderful presentation has not only broadened our understanding of the refugee experience, it has also allowed us to come together to celebrate the achievements of refugee people in our community.

At the end of the official talk, Mr Shahin stayed back for some morning tea and could not get away from our students, who had so many questions for him!

Then, upon hearing that he is a master pianist, a group of our Year 9 students took him to our music rooms, where he spent the entire lunch period playing the piano for the students. Stay tuned for the video, which we will upload to our social media once we get our hands on a copy!

We would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Shahin and the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) for the inspirational talk given by Mr Shahin.
