NAIDOC Week
Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!
At James Busby High School we are lucky to have among us a supportive community who bands together to celebrate and recognise significant cultural events.
One of the most significant events on Australia's calendar is NAIDOC Week.
We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council for helping us to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
Last term we came together as a school to acknowledge and thank Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have campaigned for change, those who have fought to stamp out racism, those who have fought to ensure the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture not only lives on, but is celebrated and recognised.
NAIDOC Week is a time to be proud, to reflect and to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, recognising them as the ongoing Custodians of the land.
We held our NAIDOC Week celebrations in the last week of Term 2 and were honoured to be joined by Deputy Mayor Karress Rhodes, Councillor Charishma Kaliyanda and Councillor Betty Green. We also had the privilege to host some of our wonderful families to help us to celebrate this significant day.
We would like to also thank the elders from the GANDANGARA Local Aboriginal Land Council, Aunty Gail and Uncle Harry, for taking the time to be at our school today, to share their valuable knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander History and Culture. We thank them for staying back after the event to have a chat with our students and families. It was an absolute honour to have made such valuable connections with everyone who joined us for NAIDOC Week.
A special thanks also to our outstanding student leaders for their wonderful display of leadership throughout the event. As always, they made us proud.
