Year 4 Literacy News

Over the last fortnight students have been working hard to apply their knowledge of syllables and rhyme to create some wonderful poetry. In our literacy sessions, we have looked at descriptive language and how we can engage the reader in our writing. Our poems were created to engage and entertain the reader.

Our focus was on two types of poems; a tanka poem and a clerihew poem.

A Tanka poem is a free verse Japanese poem which features 31 syllables.

A Clerihew poem is a humorous poem about a famous person which features a rhyming pattern.

Here is a showcase of a few wonderful examples of our poetry for you to enjoy!

My dog dippie is loving

I love Dippie with my heart

Dippie is the runt

Dippie is so slobbery

Dippie is kind and caring

While covered in two blankets

Clerihew -

JK Rowling

Your talented, amazing and creative JK Rowling.

Sometimes on the internet she is subjected to trolling.

The main character in her books is called Harry.

Her books are something on holiday I like to carry.

The fictional Harry Potter

Turns a teacup into an otter

His world is overflowing with magic

But his death was truly tragic

The kind, honest and majestic queen

Had been oh so very keen

To sip a cup of warm tea

And when she did, she shouted, “is this water from the sea?!”
