At Mackellar Primary School, child safety is part of everyone's everyday thinking and practice, and an ongoing, dedicated process of improvement. Why the Grade 5 Camp is free in 2022?

Positive Start Initiative.

The Victorian Government is taking action to re-engage primary and secondary students and boost their physical and emotional health and wellbeing in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic through the $112.9 million Positive Start in 2022 initiative.

Students who attend a government or low-fee non-government school will get a positive start in 2022 with access to school camps.

After two years of disruption to their schooling, friendships and connections with learning, the initiative will help to get students back into the world and experience the richness of Victorian life and culture.

Through Positive Start, students will have more opportunities to attend camps with their peers and enjoy adventure activities at the camps.

Positive Start in 2022 is all about reconnecting and helping school communities to join in the rich activities on offer to connect with friends and schools again.

If you would like your child to participate in the grade 5 school camp please provide consent for your child on XUNO under events before Wednesday 15th June 2022.

Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Mackellar Primary School is excited to be participating!

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by Friday 2nd September 2022.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 15 books.

Teachers have provided students with their Challenge login details to access the online platform (click on the VPRC login option), where they can:

  • access a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • record books they have read
  • be rewarded with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge

Happy reading!
