Australian Defence Force Gap Year 2023

Applications for the 2023 ADF Gap Year are now open for students who have completed Year 12, are Australian citizens and aged between 18-24 at the completion of their training.

An ADF Gap Year is a unique opportunity for students to experience life in the Navy, Army, or Air Force, without needing to make a long-term commitment.  The skills obtained through the ADF Gap Year program will provide them valuable work and life experience and are completely transferable.

It will enable students to develop the confidence for their next endeavours, whether it be within the Australian Defence Force or in private industry. They will be given the opportunity to earn a good salary, be provided with free medical and dental services, see more of Australia and make new friends.

Pakenham Secondary College Careers Website

As you may be aware, we have our own website which can be accessed at: pakenhamsccareers.com. This website provides both students and parents with a wealth of information including ‘general information’, ‘senior school’, ‘post school options’, ‘workplace learning’, ‘for parents’ and ‘for students’.

Students can access career quizzes, resumes, cover letters and more by entering the ‘secure area’. Parents can also access this tab by creating a log in for yourself, enabling you to see what resources are available.

All students are introduced to this website via Humanities.  It is a website they should visit across all year levels.  Whether you want to look at past VCE exam papers, VCE study designs, find out more about VCAL, need work experience forms, need to know more about TAFE or university, the information is all here.

Electrician as a Career

Electricians design, assemble, install, test, commission, diagnose, maintain and repair electrical networks, systems, circuits, equipment, components, appliances and facilities for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes.

To become an electrician you will need further training and education (Certificate III in Electrotechnology) which is usually completed through an apprenticeship. Electricians can generalise or specialise in a range of fields.

The need for electricians is expected to grow strongly over the next 5 years therefore, it is a trade worth considering.  Most electricians work in construction, manufacturing or mining.  The majority of electricians work full-time and their earnings are above average.

Some of the skills needed to succeed as an electrician include mechanical, mathematical and technical design.  They need to be able to trouble shoot and use critical thinking skills.
