Design and Technologies

Year 10 Textiles

As a teacher in the Design and Technologies space, I will never tire of the privilege of watching students grow. Grow with their design skills, their creativity and innovation, their technical skills, their team building skills and their confidence.

In Term 1, students in the Year 10 Textiles classroom were asked to choose a designer and identify their signature style.  Unpacking what defines a designer’s style is a very hands-on way of understanding the backbone of designing.  The class then delivered wonderful design options that then had to be realised as their own original designs.

Ten weeks later, we are now in the final stages of the students producing corsets that reflect their chosen designer.  Ms Clark and I could not be prouder of their products, the processes they have applied, their planning and application of using different tools in the workspace and the persistence that they have all demonstrated.

These corsets are a wonderful indication of working an applied subject and being back in the classroom.  This sneak peak is a teaser for the College Community as a reminder that we look forward to staging a Fashion Parade and showing products of Year 10, 11 and 12 students during the Design and Art Exhibition in early Term 4.

Student Reflections

There is a lot that goes into planning, designing and sewing a corset. It was a difficult journey, especially considering I had to add something extra onto mine to make it more complicated. However, I am sure everyone is just as proud as I am with how hard we have worked and how beautiful our corsets have turned out. Thank you so much it has been such an amazing experience to sew our corsets.

The process of creating our corset was a real learning experience as there were so many different techniques to learn but it was extremely fun. Yes, it was slightly frustrating at times, but it was definitely worth it, seeing all our beautiful corsets come together and to help each other throughout the process.
