Exam Time = Stress Time

Assessment periods (examination periods) are especially stressful and anxiety provoking! These periods in our life can be especially tough as we juggle the academic pressures alongside our personal lives.

Life is busy and can become very overwhelming leading up to exams. What is important to recognise is that, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! It is normal to feel overwhelmed and stressed during this time leading up to exams. Some signs of stress include feeling moody or overwhelmed, difficulties with decision making, a lack of motivation, muscle tension, headaches and fidgeting.

People experience exam stress for a variety of reasons, from worrying they might fail or wanting to do well, to dealing with pressure from family members or teachers or struggling to understand the things they’re studying. Everyone experiences stress differently, and everyone has different reasons for being stressed in the lead up to exams.

Some ways young people can deal with exam stress are:

  • Take a break and step away
  • Eat some food or drink some water
  • Go outside and take a walk
  • Do something you love, like riding a skateboard
  • Physically disrupt what you're doing. For example - take a shower, so you can return with a clear head.

If they are finding these strategies do not help then it may be time to speak to a trusted adult so they can access additional supports to assist with the deeper emotions.

Does meditation help with exam stress?

Recent studies show that meditating before you study can improve your reading comprehension, memory, concentration, stress and anxiety. Post meditation, your mind is less likely to wander and you're more likely to stay focused for longer periods of time. Give it a go!

There are lots of exam meditations you can try on Youtube. HERE is just one example.
