Academy of Enterprising Girls

A selected group of Year 7 and Year 8 students participated in an extension workshop ‘The Academy of Enterprising Girls’ on Friday 20 May. The workshop was facilitated by the Young Change Agents.

'The Academy for Enterprising Girls' is an organisation designed to inspire and prepare girls for the future of the workforce. This learning experience has been co-designed with experts and students to meet the needs of Australian girls and our local industries and it aims to ensure young women are equipped for jobs of the future, in non-traditional growth industries such as technology and engineering, where there are increasing opportunities but unfortunately where women are greatly under-represented.

During the full day workshop students were provided with opportunities to think like an entrepreneur, how to 'spark an idea' and test its viability and what they needed to do to turn that idea into reality. The skills that were introduced on the day enabled students to think creatively and work collaboratively with others.

Students worked to identify problems in their community and create a vision for the future they want to create. Students worked through the following Design Thinking Process:

Student Feedback

Two weeks ago, we were given the opportunity to participate in the Young Change Agents program, where we learnt to think and develop the skills of an entrepreneur who was producing a social enterprise from scratch. We learnt the process of turning the interest of an ethical issue into a service or even product that could help others. In groups, we were able to design, prototype and eventually pitch our ideas to everyone. I had a lot of fun being able to work with others and really enjoyed this experience.

On Friday 20 May,  I was lucky enough to participate in an entrepreneurial workshop led by Young Change Agents. We worked in groups and together we had to come up with an idea to make the world a more sustainable place. My group came up with the idea of a digital Myki app to track your Myki and to scan it from your phone, this was to help reduce the overproduction of Myki cards. This activity really helped my team building and quick thinking skills. For one of the activities we had to list as many ideas as we could in one minute. My team came up with over 40 ideas. Overall, I had a lot of fun and it was a really rewarding experience.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data Notice

Each year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). Kilbreda will again be participating in this process over the coming months.

The NCCD process requires Kilbreda to identify information already available in the school about ways that we are supporting students with an identified disability. We do this as part of our requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 and in line with the NCCD Guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes: year of schooling; category of disability (physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional); and level of adjustment provided (support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive).

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

Below is an information sheet for parents. If you have any further questions about the NCCD, please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Learning Diversity at the College, Denise Dunne.
