Year 11 Student 2022 Model UN Conference

On 20 May, our Year 11 Politics class attended McKinnon Secondary College to participate in the annual Model UN Conference. The process of preparing for the event involved creating a position statement based on our assigned country's stance on climate change.

The ‘countries’ that Kilbreda represented included Mozambique, the United Kingdom and Brazil. Each country proposed an amendment based on issues with the current climate change action policies.

When we arrived, we engaged in debating about possible amendments, signing other nations' amendments and debating on solutions and conflicts of interest. Going into this, many of us were slightly reluctant as the uncertainty and the fear of the unknown was shining through. However, once we all got into the swing of things and understood how everything functioned, we were all extremely keen to continue our day!

As a result, we learned lots about debating and negotiating and made friends from other schools. It was a memorable experience for all!

At the end of the day, we voted on the final resolution. The Honourable Secretary General read out plausible amendments, each country had to hold up their flag determining whether the change to the final resolution would pass. All in all, we believe that the final resolution would aid this pressing climate change crisis.

Year 7 Geography Project - Water Sources

Recently in Geography, we were assigned the Oval, P.E Office, Vegetable Patch and Maintenance Shed, to photograph all the water sources we could find at each location.

Ruby and Stefanie asked the Maintenance Manager, Mr Hosking many questions. Some of these questions were:

  • Is more water used in the holidays or school time?
  • How much water is used by the hoses?
  • How much water do the outside toilets use every day?
  • Does the College have any water tanks? If so, where are they located?

We discovered that there is a water tank underneath the oval which is the size of a basketball court and can hold up to 182,000 litres of water! A basketball court is 27 metres long and 14 metres wide!

Other things we learnt were that the sprinklers go on once a week in the winter, more water is used in school times rather than holidays and there’s another water tank behind the maintenance shed that holds 5000 litres!

These answers shocked us and hopefully someday we won’t use that much water in the future. Now we have to do a full report, which includes a sketch map of the area we were allocated, a data analysis and an evaluation of the fieldwork methods we used.

We enjoyed this activity a lot because we worked as a team, it was practical and got us outside to enjoy nature.

Year 12 Business Management - Yakult Virtual Tour (Operations Management)

In a recent incursion, Year 12 Business Management students had the opportunity to partake in an activity and virtual tour with commentary of the Yakult factory.

Students worked together to follow instructions and make a friendship band – demonstrating the transformation that occurs as part of processes, one of the key elements in an operations system.

In the Kildare Centre, the students viewed an online tour with our own tour guide.  Our Yakult consultant commentated throughout the tour, explaining the different raw materials that are inputs for the product.

We saw a demonstration of the different processes that occur – fermentation, blending, mixing, as well as the bottle making. The different quality control measures throughout the transformation were highlighted during the tour. Discussion about materials management and CSR considerations allowed the students to see connections between the theory and practices in a contemporary business.

Students were able to ask and answer questions making the experience interactive.
