School Council

2021 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY

The purpose of the annual report to the school community is to inform parents and the wider school community of the school's successes, activities and achievements throughout the year, and to meet legislative and regulatory requirements under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 and the National Education Agreement 2008.

Once ratified by the School Council the ‘Annual Report to the School Community’ is available on the school website and made available at the school office.

 TRAFFIC SAFETY AT TPS

Thank you to parents, Masterplan and Grounds subcommittee members and leadership for their ongoing efforts in improving the traffic conditions around our school. As a result of their work with Darebin Council you will be noticing some changes in the traffic conditions around the school:

-       Upgrades to signage and line marking in Hutton Street to improve the visibility to the speed limit signs,

-       Placement of the speed trailer on Hutton Street prior to raise awareness of the speed limit to drivers and their own driving behaviour from both east and west bound vehicles,

-       A traffic speed survey on Hutton Street will also take place after school holidays to help inform Council how the street is used and will determine if further work needs to be carried out.

SCHOOL PHOTOS

School photos have now been completed and you will now be able to order your photos from Arthur Reed directly. School Council in conjunction with Arthur Reed will send out a short feedback survey in term three.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

We're planning our premier fundraising event, the Trivia Night. The theme is Future is Now, which was to happen last year but was cancelled due to covid, so we're planning to take it to fruition this year, with your support.

It will be held at 7.00pm on Saturday 13th August at the Community Hall at the Aboriginal Advancement League on Watt St.

So please save the date, as it promises to be a fun night for parents and carers, and a chance to support the school and raise funds for Literacy Resources for Classrooms.

EDUCATION SUBCOMMITTEE

Respectful Relationships Initiative

Recently TPS secured $2,000 from its 'Respectful Relationships' budget for purchasing new books to diversify its library collection. In particular, purchasing books that promote equality and diversity in the form of gender, identity, sexuality, and family, and increase the representation of people:

  • from a range of multicultural backgrounds
  • with a physical and/or neuro disability
  • experiencing a mental illness or dealing with grief
  • who identify as LGBTQIA+.

We’d love to hear your recommendations of books that we could purchase, via link here

As we continue to add new books to the collection, we’ll be also removing books that don’t align with TPS’s deadly values of respect, trust, working together, integrity and perseverance. If you come across content in a TPS library book that doesn't feel right, please either mention it to your teacher or email the TPS Education Subcommittee of Council at [email address] so that it can be reviewed and potentially removed from the collection.

'Meet the Author'

In June, TPS hosted author Andrew McDonald of the Real Pigeons junior fiction series to raise funds for the school library. Approximately 90 kids attended and helped to raise almost $1300, with an additional $164 in credit from book sales by The Little Bookroom. This will also go towards  purchasing new books to renew and diversify the library's collection.

Did you know?

TPS has partnered with The Little Bookroom through its Community Reading Rewards program. The Little Bookroom provides TPS with recommendations and supports us at book-related events. As part of this partnership, TPS also earns 15% in credit from every sale when you mention TPS at the Little Bookroom or their sister store Neighbourhood Books. So far this year we’ve raised over $500 this year.

Scholastic Book Club

Twice each term, your child will receive a Scholastic booklet, with books delivered to your child's classroom once purchased. 20% of your purchases earns credit towards books from the Scholastic collection.

Parent/Carer volunteers

TPS is seeking to establish a group of parent volunteers to support the TPS library and various literacy programs. The group will be meeting on Friday mornings to help cover and catalogue new books, audit our current collection and help organise future events.

If you have any interest in joining the volunteer group, please email the TPS thornbury.ps@education.vic.gov.au
