YEAR 6 2021 CAMP - THE BRIARS MT MARTHA

This week the Year 6s ventured off to The Briars, an adventure camp in Mt Martha.  The students completed a range of activities that tested their ability to work together and overcome fears. This wonderful group displayed the perfect attitude and gave everything a go. Check out their thoughts below.

The Briars experience was really fun and enriching. It brought both St James and St Johns together and encouraged us to step out of our comfort zone in many ways. Going to the Briars was a great opportunity for us to expand and grow our knowledge as a person. Overall, Year 6 camp definitely made up for last year and more. We have had an amazing time and hope that next year it will be just as exciting at secondary school.

Camp was really quite an experience.  We made lots of new friends - some from St Johns and some with St James. We learnt lots about ourselves and how to work together as a team to get things done. There were lots of funny moments like when James and Josh fell in the river off their canoe or seeing everyone's faces on the giant swing (I think mine was the worst!) The cabins were interesting… I think the teachers may have regretted some of their choices... We all had lots of fun hanging out with our friends and our new ones. We all enjoyed doing the activities with our group.

Camp was one of the best experiences we have had in the time we have been at St.James.  When we heard we were going into lockdown we were petrified that it wouldn’t happen again… but then we got the all clear that we could go to camp and we were excited. My favourite activity was the giant swing, with canoeing at a close second. The giant swing was a massive rope that had a seat harness that was attached to you, to anyone that is going to the camp I would advise you to go to the top of the giant swing because it would be a missed opportunity if you didn’t.

Canoeing was very fun and they have a lake near there that has ducks, fishes and even tadpoles. You and your partner get a canoe that you can name which is very fun. My partner Dulcie had a yellow canoe so we named it……. BIG BANANA. So that is my point of view of my camp but it might be different when you go to camp so get prepared to have a fantastic time.

St Johns and St James came together as one whole parish. Ga Ga ball was people’s go to in their free time,  though I kept yelling when the ball moved even by the littlest bit. The morning runs were somewhat fun… but waking up early was not the best!

On the second day we walked to the beach and spent most on the day there. We did 3 water activities and 3 non water activities thankfully we got the bus back. I was in group 3 with Mr Brown.. The first night we did a night walk and the second night was a trivia night. Mr Crowe told Montanna and I to grab a pack of lollies. The one we picked were skittles. We shared them with the teachers. The worst part was probably the bus ride home, it took forever.

At the start I thought we weren’t going to go on camp because we were just in a 5 day lockdown. I was scared we weren’t going. The activities we had to do was the giant swing. It was about 30m high up. I think everyone enjoyed it. Next is archery. We all tried to hit the target  but some of us like me only hit the board and some didn’t even hit it but it got into the tree, next is the flying fox I was one of the last people to get on it but I really enjoyed having a go on it. Next, low ropes. It wasn’t as fun as some people thought it was going to be. Next is canoeing. I got pushed in the water by two St John's kids but it was still fun. The last of them all was crate stacking. It was quite fun. We had to stack up crates and see who could make the most crates stacked up. I had a great time at camp. Thank you everyone who made this camp experience happen.

Throughout Camp we learnt lots about our classmates. Here is a snapshot of what we learnt:

We learnt that Jack’s encouragement can be very influential

We learnt that Mark has a talent in archery

We learnt that Spencer loves his rice bubbles

We learnt that Mr Mutimer doesn’t snore

We learnt that we can work together with new people easier than we thought

We learnt that Dulcie has a really cool pair of sunglasses

We learnt what Gaga Ball is.
