Breakfast Club

Meet some of our Breakfast Club Volunteers!

Kylie and Boi

How long have you been volunteering at Breakfast Club?

Kylie: 3 years, since it started.

Boi: 4 weeks.

Why do you choose to volunteer?

Kylie: I believe that everyone should have a full tummy. I have seen people in my life struggle with homelessness and so I feel that I have to make sure that no one goes without food. I love seeing all the smiles from the kids too!

Boi: When I heard about the Breakfast Club, I was touched by this initiative and knew I wanted to be part of it. To be given the opportunity to have direct input in fostering a nurturing environment in the school for everyone in the community. I could not think of a better way to set an example for my daughter, in that it is the little actions we take that can make a world of difference.

What is your favorite story to share from your time at Breakfast Club?

Kylie: Once, a child came up to me and commented that “Your food is so yummy!”. There was also a time last year when Ian and I worked together to support a child who had not eaten for a few days. We gave the child food and filled up their bag with other supplies to take home. To children in these situations, 1 piece of toast is like gold to them.

Boi: Having volunteered for some weeks now, my eyes have been opened by the work we do. This has been made clear to me as I’ve observed the same children coming by week after week. Initially shy and unsure of themselves and what they want, they are now confident in speaking to me in the mornings. Being able to foster this nurturing environment will not only result in fed children, but happy and confident children being able to pursue their studies without the worries of unfortunate circumstances they may find themselves in.

What is your favorite breakfast food?

Kylie: Scrambled eggs with Hollandaise Sauce.

Boi: Thick toast with butter and tea.

What would you like people to know about DCC's Breakfast Club?

Kylie: That it’s free for everyone. No family or community member will be turned away. And don’t be afraid to ask for help and support.

Boi: We welcome everyone to bring forward ideas for how the Breakfast Club can work such as maybe eating outside if the weather permits or things they would like to see on the menu. We are inclusive and welcome everyone.
