Term 3: Career News

Term 3 is a busy term in the careers space with VTAC applications opening up for our Year 12 students and subject selection taking place for middle and senior students.

In the second week of Term 3 students in Years 9-11 were lucky enough to attend the Career Launchpad event hosted by Monash Tech School.  This was a fast-paced networking event where students had the opportunity to sit down with professionals in a handful of different industries including, Science, Housing, Innovation, Sustainability, Law, Transport, Social, Health etc. and pick their brains around future occupations and pathways, the growth of their industry, tips and tricks around starting a career and their own career journeys.  The feedback from this event was very positive with students enjoying being able to have one-on-one conversations with industry experts and a chance to explore a variety of different jobs and careers through Q&A and conversation.

With VTAC applications open and underway Year 12 students may feel like they have more questions than ever about entry requirements, courses and pathway options.  The career department is a good place to start however sometimes the Universities and TAFEs are able to give the most accurate advice for their individual programs.  Open days are a great opportunity for students to reach out and ask specific questions about program requirements, prerequisites and pathways and a list of open days for Victoria and surrounding institutions is attached below.

Work Experience Feature

Name: Harshini Premnath Year Level: 10

What industry did you work in for your work experience placement?

In a Science-Chemistry Laboratory

What were the tasks you completed as part of your work experience placement?

Tasks I completed as part of my work experience include understanding various ways of testing products and how the system works, physically trying a few tests and helping complete some of the worker's work with their guidance.

What were your favourite tasks that you were required to do? Why?

My favourite tasks were running a few of the tests they do such as a pH level test, the discharge rate test and the viscosity level test as they were all fun and something new to me.

What is something that surprised you about your placement?

Something that surprised me was the number of tests they must run just to successfully deliver one product.

Do you think would enjoy doing further work in this industry?

Yes, after this experience, I think in the future I would definitely enjoy doing this as it is involved with science, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What is something you took away from your work experience placement?

Something I would take away is to be included and friendly towards other people. During my time there all the staff made me feel comfortable and included which allowed me to have fun, so I learnt to also carry that out myself.
